George wasn’t the first to record Amarillo. It was first released by Terry Stafford, I think, in 1973 or 74. George had been singing it in honky-tonks for years. So he recorded it for his first album.
Terry Stafford had a hit in the early 60s called “Suspicion”. He sounded a lot like Elvis.
As for picking a favorite, it can’t be done.
