The left became absolutely obsessed with getting Trump’s tax returns - to the point they were absolutely sure that the mere act of acquiring them would destroy Trump. Maddow proceeded accordingly: so absolutely convinced of the imperative of obtaining & revealing his returns that her cognitive dissonance prevented her from asking herself the question “so what?” The mere act of revealing became the end goal unto itself. The consequence - yes he earned a lot of money, yes he paid a lot of taxes, no it proves nothing actionable - just never occurred to her (or the substantial crew supporting this endeavor).
The whole point of the Right on the subject has consistently been: he acted properly & legally & reasonably, and it’s none of your business. The Left, having designated the Right their mortal enemy, _had_ to respond with “he’s hiding some terrible secret that will destroy him!”. Trump’s 3D-chess move was to refuse release, causing them to chase that red herring - until some convenient moment, when he (as noted by Scott Adams) sent the two pages anonymously to a rabid opponent who would see to its unavoidable & hysterical publication, with embarrassing results.
I think they wanted them because they would provide an endless amount of "deductions" and other tiny things they could use daily to make Trump look bad. He won't release them because this episode proves that the reporting would be unfair and negative - and I agree with Trump. If he did something wrong the IRS would prosecute him, they haven't and they aren't.

There is no legal requirement that he release them. Just because it was the habit of past presidents to do so, the Left is finding out the hard way that Trump is not at all like previous presidents. He is his own man.
He's also already been elected. There is no need to prove anything to the electorate to get their votes. His supporters do not care about his tax returns. Except for leaked ones like this 2-pager for 2005, he won't release any returns himself....except as a head fake to the media to send them scrambling down another squirrel hole looking for their Trump/Russian connection gemstone.
And like you said, this MadCow debacle shows just how biased, negative, gotcha' moment and an almost vindictiveness or revengeful aspect is revealed in the Leftist media's reporting of Trump.
To release them would show weakness. It would be caving to his enemies. And for what reason? So his political enemies and the lying media can cannibalize him night and night on cable TV about details of his returns that NO ONE but themselves even care about? And then only for the purpose of attacking him?
Trump is doing the right thing by ignoring calls to release his returns. The Left can stick it.
Maddow fell in love with the gardener? Whoa. Never knew that. Never cared. But still, funny. I can’t imagine wanting to sleep with that.
She can always blame it on the Russians for setting her up. What the heck can we do with these people. They politicize every single aspect of their life. Really sad. The cause was all that mattered. The issue was irrelavent. As is their life.
The issue was relevant IF he was hiding something illegal/immoral.
But he wasn’t.
The Left can’t cope with the notion of productive people actually _earning_ their way up, without resorting to some form of dirty tricks.

The last place you put anything illegal in writing is on an IRS tax form with your signature. Especially if you are Donald Trump who gets audited every year.
And conversely, if you are an Al Capone, the last place you put anything valuable is in your large hidden safe. Because if it is a large safe it cannot by definition be hidden 100 %. You opened the dummy safe Geraldo lol.
For all their talk of laws, and their fondness for imposing them, the Left is surprisingly disinterested in where actual laws actually apply.
Maddow was only looking for _anything_ on that tax form which could be leveraged into feigned outrage. Her eager audience was dismayed to find that not only did Trump do nothing wrong on that tax form (legally or morally), he was duly screwed by it exactly the way they’ve been clamoring for over decades (substantially higher tax bracket than their alleged champions).
