I was struck by the elitism where the hosts of the recital would not even allow the name of their club to be mentioned.

You might not think it elitist if you had the money to belong to it but they let just anyone in. You would never be able to get through dinner without being approached by every tom, dick and harry with a proposal for you to invest in their new vegetable slicer or magic auto polish, or leaving a fat envelope with you containing their manuscript so you could contact a movie director for them...

And, of course, the subject of study by scientists in an attempt to produce similar instruments today.

They can produce exact duplicates but they will never admit that they sound the same. Sort of like fake great paintings that no one can tell from the originals.
