US Sen. Ed Markey says expected withdrawal of fuel economy emissions standards 'wrong way to go'
The Republican ^

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Massachusetts, took issue Wednesday with reports that the White House will move away from Obama-era fuel economy emissions standards for model year 2022 to 2025 cars and light trucks, saying it's "the wrong way to go for our security, economy and environment."

The Massachusetts Democrat, who sits on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, spoke out against the proposed rollback shortly before President Donald Trump was expected to direct the Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider its conclusion that car makers could meet the strict limits on greenhouse gas emissions.

Contending that gas prices are "the energy bill Americans pay most often," Markey said moving away from the Obama administration's 54.5 miles per gallon standard for future vehicles "means families will end up paying more at the pump."

...

The EPA approved the vehicle emission standards in January -- one week before Trump took office and a year ahead of when it was scheduled to complete its review of whether cars and light trucks would be able to comply with those limits, Politico reported.

Hey Ed, every automobile manufactures makes small fuel efficient cars all the way up to large trucks and SUV's. Most people are not going out and buying the tiny cars you wish they wound buy. They are buying mostly larger sedans and SUV's. And yes, we are smart enough to understand fuel costs.

Besides joining Shumer in piling on Trump, perhaps this commentary from last Friday goosed him into pretending to be relevant?

for our security, economy and environment

Notice what a mindless talking point this is. I get how the Dems try to make the "environment" part of the argument, but adding security and economy is just plain fantasy. But Brain Dead Ed dutifully repeats it just as its written on the DNC talking point memo he got.

Man... If Trump does this, it will be one of the BEST THINGS a President has done in a long, long time...

This is a personal pet peeve of mine. MANDATING fuel efficiency is the WRONG WAY To go. It’s anti-liberty. Anti-Free Market.

Just so mis-guided. Let US make our own judgments about cost vs efficiency vs safety.

There are people who want fuel economy in a car. The manufacturers will provide economy to the extent possible. Key words there : to the extent POSSIBLE.
