Records: Chicago Police recruits rarely flunk out
Chicago Tribune ^ | 3/15/2017 | Dan Hinkel

CHICAGO — Standing before nearly 100 newly hired Chicago police recruits on their first day at the academy, Cmdr. Daniel Godsel issued a stern warning about the next six months of training.

"It's going to be very difficult, physically and mentally," he told the recruits last month. "You're going to find conditions at the academy strict and demanding. We're gonna hold each of you to the very highest of standards, and we will not tolerate anything short of excellence."

Yet the Police Department's own numbers show that the recruits have little reason to worry about washing out.

In fact, all but a relative handful of trainees graduate from the academy and become cops, raising concerns about how rigorous and selective the department is in inducting new officers.

Over a recent four-year period, the academy graduated more than 97 percent of its recruits, according to department figures obtained by the Chicago Tribune through a public records request. (snip)

Chicago police officials defended the low attrition rate, saying that aspiring recruits undergo a "stringent" vetting process before being admitted to the academy "to ensure that the best candidates are appointed to train at the academy." (snip)

As [Mayor] Emanuel has sought to boost officer morale and shore up the department, waves of new officers have entered the academy.

If history is any guide, almost all of them will end up on city streets with badges and guns.

LOL!!!

They might as well put the badges in boxes or Cracker Jacks, and then serve those for lunch.

How many don’t make it through the police “boot camp”,in other places? Isn’t part of the training here, as in the military, intentionally difficult and stressful, so as to weed out people? Not everybody is cut out to be a cop. Better to weed out people at the police academy rsther than find out they can’t cut it when they hit the streets.

Or maybe its hard to recruit cops in Chicago due to some of their sociological problems????

Our police and sheriff’s dept both have psychological reviews that weed out a bunch before boot camp.

Fixing the grades so they don’t have shortages? That’s my bet.

That is because by any objective standard those failing would be black and Hispanic.

The failure rate is so low because of the high standards for accepting trainees, no doubt.

Sample question “Have you ever committed murder?” “If so, how many?”

In Democrat-run cities the logical assumption is that in order to be considered for the job the recruit must have personal connections in the government bureaucracy, connections which preclude failure to graduate.

maybe its hard to recruit cops in Chicago

Not just Chicago. Chicago has a long history of two kinds of lawsuits.

1) Accusations of excessive use of force. Some of these are valid. Some are not valid

2) Accusations of management malfeasance. This includes both political corruption, the influence of Democrat ward committeemen and the machine over hires and promotions and diversity complaints.

The result is a management attitude that they cannot win no matter what they do. They can't please everybody. And the person not pleased will sue them. So why try to put effort into screening. Why put effort into new training techniques.

Trump's actions seem to lesson the fear of lawsuits from the Feds. But the judicial system is still structured to encourage both frivolous lawsuits and lawsuits with merit for unreasonable amounts of money.

Until the legal climate improves, there is no incentive to improve the law enforcement actions.

“....the academy graduated more than 97 percent of its recruits”....

How many of those recruits were of minority races? I know a young man who scored 90+ on the entrance exam for becoming a Chicago police officer, he is white (Italian) and still waiting after passing that test a few years back.

There has to be some white recruits in there somewhere.

What do they do when they get to the streets? The slaughter continues on the south side, no cops in site until after the bullets fly apparently.
