Somewhat right. If this fails, Trump could ask the conservatives to produce a plan that can get 60 votes.
They won’t be able to. The conservatives will then ask for the nuclear option, or at least they’ll start to. Then half of their people will abandon that because they understand the conservative value of a filibuster.
Then, rather than it become clear that they caused the failure of the only hope there could be, they will start accusing various people of being part of a conspiracy to defeat them.
From day 1 this has been the obvious rebuttal. Offer up your own text that can get past the Parliamentarian. Their response was . . . oh we don’t need to do that, we can do it with 50, which of course is the nuclear option of destroying the filibuster.
And that approach will lose the support of about half of Senate conservatives.
So they have nothing. They had nothing from day 1.
Cruz showed how to do that last week. Just have the VP overrule the parliamentarian.
