Every heart beats true ‘neath the red, white and blue – although some people apparently see overt displays of patriotism as offensive to immigrants and refugees.
George M. Cohan probably never thought about adding that coda to his patriotic anthem “You're a Grand Old Flag,” and the Iowa high school students who donned red, white and blue to support their men’s basketball team last week probably didn’t think about their actions being controversial. But the patriotic garb worn by some Valley High School students on Wednesday upset students at Des Moines North High School, which is described as being more diverse and full of refugee families.
“Any normal person, any educated person can look at that and think, ‘What the hell are these kids thinking?’” North High School assistant coach Morgan Wheat told WHOTV.com.
Now, North High basketball coach Chad Ryan is speaking out -- and says it's possible the opposing team's fans may not have had sinister intentions. "What I will say is we’re proud of our diversity at North High School — not only on our basketball team, but our population."
Valley High School’s student council responded to the hullabaloo by sending an apology letter to Des Moines North students.
“It has been brought to our attention that the decision by the Valley High School student section to wear U.S.A. apparel at our game last night was offensive to members of your community and fan base,” the letter, obtained by the Des Moines Register, began. “We are deeply sorry if we have offended anyone in any way.”
The letter continued, “We have traditionally dressed in such a fashion for great games such as the one last night.

This garbage is getting more sick every day. Next thing you know they’ll be demanding settlement cash in court.

How about these schools quit taking US Dollars? Surely they won’t want to offend anyone by being paid by evil US money. I say we make that decision for them...since they don’t have the capacity to make prudent decisions.

Although I am NOT familiar with the opposing teams ethnic makeup, I doubt that the issue was directed towards “black” students but perhaps latino or other minority students.
At one time this is (or was) America and if the kids choose to proudly display American colors so be it, those who are offended by those colors can leave. The “red/white and blue” has been displayed around the world for eons, those who are “offended” by those colors are free to leave and find a country whose colors are more to their liking.
I wear red,white ,and blue most days. I was born in America, I enlisted in the US Army in 1969 and served for nearly 8 yrs.-honorably discharged. My children and my grandchildren were all born in America. If ANY school—or ANY community—in America is OFFENDED by the colors of OUR flag they are unAmerican and ought get the H-— out of America.

My son is an assistant coach and his team won the state this year.
But when it comes to his classes, Yeah, Fence post.
It seems that it was intended to be an in your face gesture, typical of intense high school sporting events. We were probably more obnoxious than that.
The part that is unbelievable is that dressing in patriotic colors is understood by both sides to be an in your face gesture to students who now make their home in the USA. If my family immigrated to Ireland I would embrace white, orange and green. Never would I be offended at seeing people dressed in those colors while shouting,”Erin go braugh!”
It’s bizarre that patriotism in one’s own country is now offensive to residents of that same country. I guess we know that assimilation for future generations is completely off the table.
