Well, actually he could, of course, he just refused to, which is given the circumstances a very aggressive act and not one that should be foisted upon a NATO ally. He couldn't have helped Geert Wilders any more if he tried, and it looks like it might be worth FIVE SEATS to Dutch conservatives. If things in the Netherlands do not turn out to his advantage he has only his ham-handed political incompetence to blame.

On another thread, a FReeper suggested it was a deliberate move to allow Dutch authorities to act tough, so that Wilders wouldn’t seem to be the only one willing to stand up to them.
