‘Carlos the Jackal’ Goes on Trial Over 1974 Paris Grenade Attack
NBC News ^ | 3-13-17

PARIS — Once the world's most-wanted fugitive, the political terrorist known as Carlos the Jackal appeared in a French court Monday over a deadly 1974 attack at a Paris shopping arcade.

The Venezuelan-born Ilich Ramirez Sanchez is accused of throwing a hand grenade from a mezzanine restaurant into a shopping area in the the Latin Quarter of Paris. Two people were killed and 34 injured.

The 67-year-old is already serving a life sentence in France for a series of murders and attacks he has been convicted of perpetrating or organizing in the country on behalf of the Palestinian cause in the 1970s and 1980s.

If convicted of first-degree murders in the latest trial, the Marxist guerrilla who became a symbol of Cold War anti-imperialism could get a third life sentence.

As the trial opened Monday, Carlos denounced it as a "gross manipulation of justice" 42 years after the attack. He has denied involvement and pleaded innocent.

Asked to state his profession before the court, he called himself a "professional revolutionary," and said "I'm doing fine" in prison — after more than 20 years behind bars.

At the time of the attack, Ramirez Sanchez had not yet been dubbed "Carlos the Jackal." He was 24 years old and already had joined the organization Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

A blast from the past, he's been in jail in France for about 2 decades, guess they want to add another life sentence. Interesting, about a week after his contemporary PFLP terrorist organized a woman's march in the USA. Same palestinian/communist organization, PFLP. Wonder if they ever met back in the day. Why did it take 40 years to bring this to trial? Did they just recent find out his connection to the attack?

A perfect example of why I hate moslem and socialist revolutionaries. Two people minding their own business at a market, having a nice day in Paris.
And this mindless A-hole take them by surprise and murders them in a frightening and painful and disfiguring death......because he supports a Palestinian cause. That’s it.

Our founders never murdered people in a market. They shot it out with the Brits. They curried favor with France to help them. But they didn’t do this crap.

No, they've known about it. My understanding from other articles charges were originally dismissed for lack of evidence. Don't think that was in a trial or any proceeding he was present at. He was caught by French special forces in 1994 and subsequently convicted of other attacks. Why recharging this after all these years, and while he's serving a life sentence, not entirely clear. Perhaps simply France making a statement about terrorism.

John Reed-(I think) wanted to return to the U.S. from East Germany and mysteriously died. That guy in Russia-forgot his name- can stay there. Polanski? Him too. Carlos? He should not be given the dignity of a natural death-war criminal. Just find a family member of one of the victims to do the dirty deed.

Dean Reed, maybe. John Reed was 70 years before that.

She is certainly a more pleasant memory than 'Carlos the Jackal.'

The PFLP was supported by both Libya and Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq.

...and, one of Carlos the Jackal’s fellow PFLP associates just led the “Day Without A Woman” protests here in the US.
