When we become just as strident and obnoxious as they are, we don’t accomplish anything. Persuasion requires the other person to change their way of seeing things, and challenging them to look at both sides is a good technique because it appeals to a persons basic sense of fairness.
Noble sentiment. but when your getting your brains beaten out the first order of business is to stop the beating. That usually looks a lot like gasp fighting. Once you've at least fought them to a standoff, they become much more amenable to reasoned debate.
