One thing I learned during the two years I covered our state legislature was to avoid the press gallery at all costs. I always sat in the public gallery — which actually gave me a better view of the proceedings, plus the opportunity to interact with real people.
The one time I sat in the press box, all I heard was members of the big shot media making snide comments about the GOP legislators. I was tempted to say something like “why don’t you shut your pie holes and concentrate on getting your stories and meeting your deadlines.”
But being in the 21st century news media is more of a lifestyle choice than a profession.
