There is a certain irony on hearings carried out by our politicians who know that any real testimony of truth would land the witness in prison for decades, yet we keep gobbling it up and being entertained by the drama.
Since Congress is a legislative branch, not a judicial or law enforcement entity, its investigations are always a sham. People have been held in contempt of Congress without consequences because the Congress can't arrest, try or convict anyone (except in impeachment cases). People have refused to testify before Congress with total impunity and with no consequences. And, as you pointed out, if something is classified, whatever Congress finds out will never see the light of day anyway.
Why don't they just go to FISA and get the docs with signatures? Start from there and go backwards.
