"Senior American officials" makes it sound like an American source in a foreign country. Otherwise -- why the need to identify it as American?

Exactly. They could’ve just said “some dude we talked to” but I guess that wouldn’t go over as well. I think a lot of people I did at first would just gloss over that and assume it was “senior Administration officials” as usual.
