Trump administration officials fed news outlets misinformation ahead of President Trump's address to Congress Tuesday night, hoping to get more positive press coverage, CNN reported Wednesday afternoon.
Ahead of Trump's speech, he told numerous news outlets, The time is right for an immigration bill, as long as there is compromise on both sides, hinting that he may call for immigration reform, including a possible path to legal status for undocumented immigrants, in his speech to Congress.
But he made no such remarks Tuesday night, and CNN's Sara Murray called it a "bait-and-switch."
Basically they fed [news outlets] things that they thought these anchors would like, that they thought would give them positive press coverage for the next few hours. A senior administration official admitted that it was a misdirection play," Murray said.
"You will note that when the president was actually out there speaking to the American public, he didn't talk about a path to legal status, he talked about reforming the legal immigration system so it's merit-based,"

This is pegged the wrong way. President Trump did in fact make a comment in his speech about compromise on immigration reform.
That’s where he started and that’s where he left it.
CNN can not claim to be deceived. It made the speech.
Just not what they and their Dem pals want.
Chess Game.
Exposing moles and leakers sometimes takes several moves. Same as chess.
CNN has proven itself to be the Opposition Party.
CNN purposefully lies and creates #FAKENEWS.
This type of deception is what someone does to their enemy. When at war, it is acceptable to deceive, lie, distort and misdirect. This is what CNN has been doing. This is what the Opposition Party has been doing. The Opposition Party is the msm.
Knowing that CNN, msm, Opposition Party, has taken a warfare stance and has made Trump and his administration the enemy, then Trump and his administration has every right to respond to the Opposition Party in like manner.
In other words, CNN, msm, the Opposition has lost the right to the truth.
As such, it as acceptable for Trump and his administration to defend itself by treating them like an enemy.

I guess I don’t understand the premise of CNN complaint..
Whatever Trump gave them as potential points in his magnificent address to Congress, they still would have covered it...
Are they pissed they missed an opportunity to bash him ?
Cha ching!
Whittle the list down
hey, he talked about reform. but it was our reform, not theirs.
Mark Levin sure jumped on it, like a duck on a junebug.
Ha ha......just because he can!
Maybe CNN shouldn’t report fake news
The media lies, Trump lies. Wht can you do?
Trump did not mislead reporters.
He misled the people who voted for him.
In my opinion, Trump has always wanted legal status and a pathway citizenship for illegal immigrants who have not committed violent crimes.
The reason Trump did not mention Amnesty in his speech is because people on his staff noticed the instant outrage on Conservative forums like Free Republic after the story was leaked.
Agree. It was a trial balloon that got shot down immediately on Free Republic which is the sounding board for the media and politicians alike.
POTUS continues to use one of his favorite (and most successful) weapons...
Even here on FR there were weak-kneed chicken-littles going crazy about the sky falling...

Below is the hiring announcement from CNN political director, David Chalian.
Good morning
Im thrilled to let you all know that Sara Murray is joining CNNs political team as a reporter covering the 2016 campaign filing for both our television and digital platforms.
Many of you are familiar with Saras stellar work at the Wall Street Journal where she has been a digital journalist and anchor for WSJs digital network.
Prior to joining the video team, Sara covered the Romney campaign in 2012 for the WSJ where she broke news and provided smart insight into the top command of the campaign with in-depth profiles.
Saras addition to our ranks makes the best political team on television and online that much better.
CNNs Sara Murray, 29, and Washington-based TV reporter Garrett Haake, 30, are also waiting until after the general election to get hitched. They got to know each other on Romneys campaign bus as it criss-crossed Iowa in 2011.
Theres no chance we would have met otherwise, Haake said.
The sparks flew pretty fast, and they tried, unsuccessfully, to hide them.
Its hard to keep a secret from a bunch of reporters with nothing better to do than keep an eye on whatever everybody else is up to, Haake said. Youre literally trapped on a bus with people whose job is to find things out.
He was embedded with NBC at the time, and she was writing for The Wall Street Journal, so technically, they were rivals. That got awkward sometimes, he said, recalling the night rumors flew that Romney would tap Rep. Paul Ryan as a running mate.
+1
It’s incredible that people have supposedly observed Trump since he began his run, and still have no clue who he is. Some apparently believe he’s just dying to stab his supporters in the back, but people like Mark Levin keep him in check.
Trump is not that easy to manipulate. He’s also not that disloyal. He’s doing exactly what he said he would do, and for some, that’s not good enough.
