CNN's Van Jones is a frequent Trump critic if there ever was one. But after the president's speech to the nation on Tuesday night, Jones got emotional and was clearly impressed by Trump's handling of one particular part of the speech.
Jones said Trump's tribute to Navy SEAL Ryan Owens, who died in a raid in Yemen, was one of the most extraordinary moments you have ever seen in American politics, period and that it was the moment Trump became president of the United States. He also said it's the kind of thing that could make Trump a two-term president.
During Trump's remarks, cameras trained on Owens's widow, Carryn Owens, with tears streaming down her face. Facing her, Trump said her husband's legacy was etched into eternity.
Here's Jones's full commentary:
"There are a lot of people who have a lot of reason to be frustrated with him, to be fearful of him. But that was one of the most extraordinary moments you have ever seen in American politics, period. And he did something extraordinary. And for people who have been hoping that he would become unifying, hoping that he might find some way to become presidential, they should be happy with that moment....

Carryn Owens' reactions to President Trump's words had me dissolved in tears for quite awhile. I've never seen - or felt - anything like that during a SOTU. And I'll never forget it...
God bless her hero husband Ryan, and God bless and comfort Carryn Owens.
For those several moments the veil of political correctness that has had us handcuffed as a nation was lifted and we were overcome by true blue emotional patriotism. That was a special moment of unity. A cathartic moment at this late date in our history. My screen went blurry. But I do remember also seeing Ivanka standing next to the war widow. That Ivanka has some kind of fiber.
He done good
I know everyone is going to hammer me on this, but President Bushes’ address after 9/11 was as eloquent and powerful as anyone here could have wanted.
Full standing ovations, calls to patriotism and standing together as Americans. Bush’s speech was one that should be studied, but we all seem to have very short memories.
Van Jones? President Trump has won over Van Jones?
Yesterday, Trumka was saying good things about President Trump’s policies.
I’m in the Twilight Zone.
I remember the September 22d speech by President Bush. It was stirring and very emotional.
But, if I recall correctly, in that speech, the President told us that ‘Islam is a Religion of Peace’, a horrendously dangerous lie.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved that speech and we needed it. But to mislead us about Islam—unforgivable.
CNN badly wants out of the dog house. These kinda comments could help pave the way.
“Van Jones & Trumka won over?”
In sales it’s known as “know your audience”, in baseball it’s “keep your eye on the ball”.
In my view both, especially Trumka, are simply pulling up their socks for the long war by acknowledging having lost a battle.
Trumka’s track record is overtly confrontational and contrary to Jones’ well documented history, last night’s remarks may be the opening line of a new “I’m not your friend but c’aint we get along” strategy.
Yep,Ash Wendesday-Mathew 6 about being a hypocrite!
This is whitelash. How do you explain a Trump presidency to your kids?
Same van jones?
Self-proclaimed communist Van Jones is a piece of human garbage.
Why would anybody care what he says?
IT'S A TRAP
There was a preseason hockey game in Philly that never got played that night. The speech was shown on the jumbo screen of the center ice scoreboard. Every watched the speech ... everyone ... fans, players, coaches, refs, ... everyone ...
He is a snake, but realizes that some blacks are looking to honkey McCracker Trump for leadership (instead of him and the other professional race-baiters, who have delivered nothing). Now we can watch one group of Dem victims (femi-nazis) fume while another (blacks) at least gives Trump a chance...
My New Year’s resolution not to read the Times, Compost or the Slimes is holding up.
I was driving to New York City to assist with our sponsoring church in Brooklyn. Saw the speech on a small tv in a gas station in West Virginia. Everyone was frozen to the ground and we all watched him talk. Best speech I have ever heard in my life.
He can be the food taster.
A historic speech begets historic responses....
He was stating that he just realized Trump has more than what it takes. That was a moment few men are capable to handle let alone shine. It highlighted a brilliant speech and touched Van Jones who hates America and the military.
