Largest Federal Employee Union Reacts to Trump’s Proposed Budget Cuts

AFGE President says cuts could leave some agencies with not enough people to do the work

WASHINGTON – J. David Cox Sr., national president of the American Federation of Government Employees, issued the following statement in response President Trump’s proposed fiscal 2018 budget:

“I am greatly concerned about reports that President Trump will propose massive cuts to most non-defense discretionary spending to fund a substantial increase in military spending. While we support increases in DoD funding that enhance readiness, there is no reason to eviscerate the non-defense agencies to achieve that goal.

“Many of the federal agencies that would be targeted by these budget cuts already have been cut to the bone this decade as a result of harmful austerity policies. Americans see firsthand the result of these budget cuts when they have to wait in longer lines to visit a Social Security office or go through airport security screening.

“Further cuts could leave some agencies with not enough employees to do the work that’s required, forcing them in some cases to outsource the work to more costly contractors – negating any of the financial benefit from the cuts in the first place.

“The federal government today has about the same number of civilian workers as it did 50 years ago, even as the U.S. population has increased by more than half. Anyone who complains that the government is too big is either ill-informed or using alternative facts to support doing away with many of the fine federal programs that benefit taxpayers.”

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is the largest federal employee union, representing 700,000 workers in the federal government
and the government of the District of Columbia.

“AFGE President says cuts could leave some agencies with not enough people to do the work”

Interpretation: 20% of the people do 80% of the work. We need to keep the other lazy SOBs employed so they aren’t out stopping traffic in a protest for higher wages.

Then it's a win-win.

All public sector labor unions should be outlawed, and private sector ones severely curtailed through the vigorous enforcement of anti-trust, racketeering, tax, and right-to-work laws.

Its my understanding that the fed gov was allowed to unionize by a JFK exec order.

Is this true? If so, . . .

The Union is only worried about:
1. Loss of Union dues.
2. Loss of Union power.
3. Loss of control of their employer.
and finally.............
4. Their government workers just might have to actually produce. What a novel idea. Worse yet, a lot of “dead wood” will be discovered and consequent reduction in government workforce and improved production...which is bad because unions exist to ensure that workers obey THEM...not their employer.

Not to worry, Linda Graham says it’s DOA. The special interests will pull congressman’s strings to keep status quo.

I doubt that is true, but for sake of argument I'll accept it. I would hope that the technology advances over the past few decades made legions of clerical employees and switchboard operators obsolete.

Welcome to the new world. Most of us in the private sector have lived with a lot less and a lot more insecurity while working much harder to justify our places in the work force.

You, government drones with secure everything who bleed the budget without a care, are going to learn you are as dispensable as every one else.

BTW, about those cushy pensions that are impossible to fund without bleeding those through more taxation who don’t have pensions, that’s next on the chopping block.

Precisely... If needed, new employees can be hired.

Where does he work? Union headquarters?

There's an even smaller percentage fixing the mistakes made by the affirmative action hires.

“I doubt that is true, but for sake of argument I’ll accept it.”

The statement given by the gov. is ridiculous if true. Every company has downsized, especially the auto industry. Ford went from 180,000+ employees in the United States to about 55,000 today. Total worldwide is 200,000+.

There is no reason why, other than make work for certain groups, the government shouldn’t downsize too, especially with advances in technology.

Well, that is where you would be wrong Snowflake.

Cut, cut and cut some more. If the Government can give you a Snow Day off and still operate without the World coming to an end, you might not be as important was you think you are.

I went out to OPM.GOV and it looks like they’re right. It stops at 2014.

Cut a minimum 33% of ALL fed employees.”

And then cut 50% of those remaining. Probably everything the bureaucracy does can be done by private contractors at a reduced cost. We’d save billions and billions of dollars.

There should not be any such union. If you work/service in the government you absolutely need no special representation. If you feel otherwise, get out or be thrown out.
