George W. always was a Texican, and the extended Bush family is thoroughly mixed. A primary reason George became the Republican governors’ choice in 1999/2000, and subsequently the nominee, is that he had just won reelection with 40 percent of the hispanic vote in Texas. This was and is a good thing, not a bad thing. Neither the Republican Party nor the conservative movement will be viable in the long run without winning a competitive share of the hispanic vote. That said, George has always been tone deaf and is blundering into a needless distraction.
