Rystad Energy estimates recoverable oil in the US from existing fields, discoveries and yet undiscovered areas amounts to 264bn barrels. The figure surpasses Saudi Arabia’s 212bn and Russia’s 256bn in reserves. July 2016
Rystad has an agenda. It is Rystad’s client base revenue.
You’ll have to do some reading to get educated. Reserves come in varieties 1P, 2P and 3P, and then there are Resources, which are not Reserves.

Just in general we’re talking about 100 million years of Geology. It doesn’t care about conservative or liberal. It doesn’t care about who runs what country. It also doesn’t care about the Federal Reserve.
Oil is not an ocean. It’s not some big mass of liquid underground. It’s in pores in rocks. Down 2 miles with 2 miles of rock pressing down on the porous rock. Squeezing it. You drill a hole in the middle of it and it’s a very low pressure point surrounded by all that high pressure. The liquid in the pores flows upward, smashing through the areas of rock between a given pore and the hole. The farther you get from the hole, the less smashing can happen and that defines the flow slowing down over time.
But from that visualization, realize that some areas of porous rock are small. Maybe the volume of a car’s interior. You won’t spend $10 million to drill down to get the volume of a car’s interior. That oil is never going to come up. It’s not worth the bother.
There is a lot of that. This is one of the criteria of 1P and 2P and 3P. Oil can be there, but you’ll never bother to get it. Even if you’re starving because there’s no fuel to run agricultural tractors, you still won’t drill for that small volume.
You’ll just die.
There are limits to what can be done.
