When your only job is collecting intelligence and selling it to the American people in order to keep them safe but jihadis and cartels continue to have the upper hand, your services are no longer required.
The CIA is a “hammer” and to them everything “looks like a nail”. They are very good at collecting intelligence against state-actors, and sometimes they can even formulate an actionable plan to disrupt that state. Problem is we live in a world increasingly threatened by non-state actors like ISIS & “George Soros-type” uber-rich. The CIA isn’t nimble enough for that. But they can rattle-the-can at budget time claiming this this or that threat from Russia or (fill-in-the-blank).
Enter Donald Trump. Trump sees that he needs a screw-driver and everybody at CIA panics. Remember they are very good at destabilizing nation-states? In which direction is the hammer swinging now?
