As the Trump administration expands its deportation policy, Chicago Public Schools told its principals that they should not let any agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement into schools without a criminal warrant.
To be very clear, CPS does not provide assistance to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the enforcement of federal civil immigration law, chief education officer Janice Jackson wrote.
The district also distributed palm cards in English and Spanish from the National Immigrant Justice Center containing such legal advice as not opening doors to immigration officials.
President Donald Trump campaigned on building a wall to keep out undocumented immigrants. The Board of Education proclaimed Chicago a welcoming district where students didnt have to disclose their immigration status in order to attend classes.
But immigrants rights advocates pressured the board to protect immigrant students and families. Some schools meanwhile have held workshops on their own for teachers, students and parents to learn their legal rights if questioned by authorities.
CPS wont say how many students may be undocumented. But more than 46 percent of CPS students identify as Hispanic and another 17 percent are considered English language learners.
Last week on A Day Without Immigrants, more than 50,000 of CPS 381,000 students were absent with attendance of Hispanic students down significantly. Nearly a quarter of all Hispanic students didnt go to school, CPS said. And more than 100 schools saw attendance rates fall below 80 percent of what they were a year earlier.
We know that some families are concerned about sending their children to school at this time, but we firmly believe that the safest and most beneficial place for your children is a classroom alongside their fellow students where they can work toward a bright future, Jackson wrote in a separate letter to parents.

INS/ICE has for over 30 years a policy whereby agents do not preform enforcement operations in schools or churches.
Does anyone actually believe that ICE would send agents to a school to pick up a 6th grader. They know what the media would do to them. That's why you have never heard a story about it happening. Because they don't do it.
IMHO, I do not think ICE has any intention of raiding public schools, nor should they. The optics would be disastrous and the media would create a frenzy against Trump and republicans. I think this is the media and the left trying to create this optic of Trump rounding up women and children and kicking them out of the country. Trump should continue to do enforce the law, but it should be done using common sense (which I think he will). I also hope he is working on some very strict consequences of hiring illegals as part of the border wall.
“To be very clear, CPS does not provide assistance to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the enforcement of federal civil immigration law, chief education officer Janice Jackson wrote.”
This is very true. It us not any school’s job to do such.
But, they are to cooperate, as are any public institution or individual citizen, and cross a huge line in obstructing said enforcement.
Yep, you are correct! I agree this is a non story or maybe even fake news....
All Public Schools receive some form of Federal Funds, so using Obama’s method, you either go along or get sued and enter into a Federal take over like the police.
Fine! Win-Win. Arrest them for interfering with the duties of an enforcement officer - and maybe we can deport them also.
If they are naturalized - maybe we can revoke it.
Why do we assume it is children that ICE is after? Teacher-aids and teachers are there and quite possibly illegal.
Public schools is not our homes? Huge difference.
Same as the Public library. Our private residence is just that - private and requires a warrant.
A police officer does not need a warrant to enter a school, neither should a Federal Officer.
That’s why they don’t want to see the illegals go. There’s a lot of money in public education.
“Chicago Public Schools told its principals that they should not let any agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement into schools without a criminal warrant. “
Isn’t there something like a “Juan Doe” Warrant?
[I know - I slay me.]
Like the tree falling in the woods . . .
who would know the difference?
Drop the hammer on these self important worthless bureaucrats.
Go find a safe space with your coloring book. These schools all have COPS patrolling the hallways.
It is a terrific money laundering operation for the Chicago politicians. No one learns much of anything in the bankrupt Chicago Public Schools apart from a few select country club schools maintained within the system for the benefit of the elites.
The politicians and the teachers have a vested interest in filling the schools with the children of welfare recipients, illegal aliens and immigrants. No sane parent with an income would knowingly choose to send their kids to these hellholes.
Many parents move to suburbia to avoid the CPS.
Without the poor and destitute, the CPS would be closing schools, not building new ones to house illegals.
Local or school police =/= ICE.
Do your civic duty. Adopt an illegal.
Fine:
1. Withhold federal funds from Chicago.
2. Start issuing lots of warrants.
ICE should just go about it’s business at these school and arrest anyone interfering with their duties.
Congress should stop giving money to all schools. That spending disobeys the 10th Amendment, since the Constitution doesn’t mention education.
Hell yes. They gotta keep that enrollment census up there to keep sucking in all that Dinero Federale.
