Brigadier General John D. Slocum, Selfridge Air National Guard Base commander, discusses why basing the F-35 at Selfridge is the most strategic and economical choice for our county, state, and nation.

Selfridge ANGB is perfectly positioned for basing the F-35 Lightning II. When you factor together our strategic location to international borders, Michigan's network of Military & National Guard resources, and our existing first-class infrastructure, Selfridge is the most operationally effective location that also gives our tax payers the most bang for their buck.

THE MICHIGAN NETWORK

Selfridge Air National Guard Base (ANGB) is one of the nation’s busiest, most diverse and most advanced military installations. Located north of Detroit on the shore of Lake Saint Clair, Selfridge ANGB is a Joint Military Community whose major tenants include the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, and Customs & Border Protection.

Given the infrastructure at Selfridge and at our northern Michigan training facilities in Alpena and Grayling, we are confident that it is in the best interest of the nation, both operationally and fiscally, to locate the F-35 Lightning II at Selfridge

It seems as though SANGB has dodged the BRAC listing bullet long enough that if this move to the F-35 does not materialize, it could mean the end of the Michigan Air National Guard as we know it. Like it or not, the F-35 would be better than nothing, to say the least.

I spent a lot of time at Selfridge, my older sister was even born there and I went to 4th grade there. Stopped by the PX in May. Then drove by the field grade quarters, they were all empty. I think the base would need major upgrades.

It is also a fairly small base, probably 5 miles x 1-2 miles. Has some prime waterfront property.

Sounds like wishful thinking to me.

“prime waterfront property”

From a national defense perspective, it’s more of a prime strategic location. Current infrastructure renovations out there (fuel management) have been underway for many months now. There is more to SANGB than the nostalgia of the early days of aviation. It’s nice to have some of that heritage in Michigan, and it would be nice to hear the “sound of freedom” from time to time. Actually, with the F-35’s short takeoff and landing capabilities (STOL), neighboring residents wouldn’t be hearing nearly as much of it as they did with the F-16s and F-4s.

Need to cull the deer herd there first, or there could be some very expensive collisions.

How could that be an issue when Dearborn and Dearborn Heights are not in close proximity to SANGB?
