A heterosexual couple have lost their legal battle to enter into a civil partnership.
Academics Rebecca Steinfeld, 35, and Charles Keidan, 40, wanted to secure legal recognition of their seven-year relationship by entering into a civil partnership, rejecting marriage as they claim it carries patriarchal baggage. However, they have been prevented from doing so because the Civil Partnership Act 2004 stipulates that only same-sex couples are eligible.
In November the couple, who have a seven-month-old daughter, challenged a decision by High Court judge Mrs Justice Andrews to dismiss their judicial review action. But on Tuesday their challenge was in turn dismissed by the Court of Appeal, the Telegraph has reported.
Addressing Lady Justice Arden, Lord Justice Beatson and Lord Justice Briggs, Karon Monaghan QC advanced the argument that barring the couple from entering into a civil partnership was incompatible with Article 14 of the European Convention, which relates to discrimination, taken with Article 8, which refers to respect for private and family life.

They're bat-guano looney ... and the "law" makes them seem sane by comparison.
The couple can probably get it done in Hawaii:
The Civil Union Law

This civil union law discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation.
So the dude just says he identifies as a woman , badda bing, badda boo - civil union-ed in no time.
No charge weird academic couple...I did it for the kid.
I would agree...easy fix. Put on some skirt and blouse, and just pretend out some female status. It’s absurd but the law was designed to be absurd.
Perhaps one of them will suddenly realize his or her true self has changed genders and will start to “identify” as the opposite sex.
Then, after the contracts are signed, magically return to normal.
Well THAT takes the cake!
In theory. However, in practice, the state determines the enforceability of contracts, often on an ex post facto basis.
While I understand that these 2 people are just rebelling against marriage, I favor civil partnerships between any 2 people of any sex.
This is about tax & inheritance law. Two old maid sisters should be able to bind themselves legally to minimize their taxes & insure their shared assets go to the other at death, without having to jump through expensive legal hoops. Same for 2 old men, good friends living together to share their lives & expenses, or any 2 adult people of any sex, age, or circumstance.
Any 2 people who are emotionally bound should be able to have the law recognize & respect that bond. This is not marriage, it is a legal partnership.
