I believe it is caused by at least two reasons.

If you admit fundmental Islam is the problem ,you have to do something active to stop it, since it is never going away.
Secondly people from a Christian background have trouble fathoming Islam , because it is so different from Christianity, they just cant bring themselves to face the facts that Islam wants to subjugate convert or kill anyone who resists it, because that is what Allah and Muhammad want. - Tom
