The media doesn’t call the shots — Trump does

The media smart set fixates on creating a narrative that explains the big picture of events and offers gripping examples. In that spirit, then, here’s a narrative to help them understand President Trump’s recent burst of activity:

He’s serving notice that he, and not the media, sets the nation’s agenda. And that when journalists behave like opponents, he will treat them like opponents, punching back harder than they punch him.

That’s the meaning of the president’s epic press conference Thursday and his tour of the Boeing plant in South Carolina and Saturday’s rally in Florida. As Milton Friedman said in another context, everything else is detail.

The catalyst for Trump’s campaign-like barnstorming was that, after a rough week in which Democrats in Congress picked up the loony left’s impeachment mantle, the president’s team looked outgunned and outmaneuvered. The emerging media narrative was that the White House was in chaos, riven by infighting, leaks, an unhappy president and an unhappier first lady.

Trump knows better than most that perception, even if it’s wrong, can quickly harden into accepted fact. He sensed danger and decided to take matters into his own hands.

Nobody speaks for Trump better than Trump, which is not always a virtue. But Thursday, he made a wise game-day decision to do his solo version of a reset.

The official business was to announce his new nominee for secretary of labor, a choice that was well-received by the few outlets where it wasn’t ignored because of the media punch-palooza that followed. (A good trivia question: Name the new guy!)

The president was deliberate in making his points, talking for more than 20 minutes about what he’s done to keep his campaign promises and how he’s unfairly depicted.

The news reporters should get out into the hinterlands and talk to ordinary people.

I challenge them to come to Minnesota and avoid the Twin Cities Metro. They should check out Morrison County in the center of the state. The largest city is Little Falls, a small town of about 15,000 people. This county has a lot of Catholics and used to trend Democrat. On November 8, 2016 Donald Trump’s margin of victory over Hillary Clinton was 52.73% Yes, folks that is not his plurality but his MARGIN OF VICTORY. I figure that would be about 3 to 1.

Maybe if they talked to farmers and small town folks in the heartland, they would see a different side than what they see at their cocktail parties on the east and west coasts.

“It isn’t so much that the media is dishonest as it is that they honestly just don’t see what is happening. “

I disagree. They are dishonest as people, but also dishonest in that this is part of their ideology. They truly believe they are TASS on the Potomac and they are representing the government of the people. Their dishonesty, like TASS and other Soviet and Chinese media is rooted in “Party good, not Party bad.” Trump = Not Party = Bad.

If anyone thinks this would be different if another Republican was President, they are mistaken. This is about the revolution. The media will lie, cheat and break the law in order to further the revolution. Only when we fight back will the media stop this. Trump neutralized them, but that isn’t enough.

We need a Fairness Doctrine that will pull the medias teeth. It needs to be short, simple, easy to understand and easily enforced. As an example, commentary isn’t news and should be treated as entertainment. Imagine what would happen if Meet the Press became an entertainment show because they don’t report the news, but offer opinions that may or may not be true. If they veer off from their format, they are liable and could very well lose their license. NBC would have kittens and their guests would think twice before appearing.

“”It’s OK if they are on for opinion pieces - but really - George Stephanopolis - really? Yup - a politician with a press pass.”

Part of Fairness Doctrine. If you are part of the media or part of the administration, there is a 10 year wait before being able to cross over. Dilutes the message and prevents that partisanship factor.

Yup. They are so blinded by their bias, I don't see them ever coming around.

But until they do come around, they are worse than than useless...they are misleading.

Let Spicer announce what the President wants the press to know and walk away. No questions. Allow questions at his discretion. Same with the President’s “press conference.” Do that for 3 months. Then see if press behaves better.

We need a Fairness Doctrine that will pull the medias teeth. It needs to be short, simple, easy to understand and easily enforced.

And, that, in a nutshell, is why we shouldn't ask government to supply this for us. It's within the people's power to fix this. WE need to push back at every opportunity and call them on their dishonesty. We need to shame them at every chance. We need to mock them endlessly, until they KNOW that they are seen as the vermin they are.

I see it as similar to term limits -- we could ask them to legislate it in...or we can VOTE THEM OUT.

-- He would also do well to ignore the Media entirely if they keep up the phony charade. --

NO

GWBush did that, to his detriment.

Trump has to counter the BS forcefully, and often. It is a never ending task. The press as an institution is going to outlast Trump, the person, and this is, by nature, WAR. The press and the president are opponents. The press has its own agenda, which is not in line with nationalism and patriotism.

I can’t get behind the bathroom issue. I have seen far more mischief from same sex predators as heterosexual predators. I am not sure I want that man who dresses like a women in the same bathroom as my small son. Given that he has to go somewhere. I can’t exactly feel completely good no matter where.

Wow! You have stole my thunder before I could even get it written up. You are so exactly right. There needs to be a law since the Press is so important to informing Americans which equals important to our national security because people cannot vote correctly if they don’t have the facts. There needs to be a law that so much time or equal shows giving conservative ideas is mandated not a show where you have three liberals and one conservative who gets jumped on by the others but actually a 10 or 15 minutes show allowing the conservatives to Counterpoint the liberal crap all the previous hour long show.

"Trump has to counter the BS forcefully, and often."

It was an extraordinary use of the bully pulpit, yet accounts calling it a nonstop rant don’t do it justice. Some of it was playful and teasing, and Trump wasn’t alone in finding humor on several occasions. Many journalists clearly enjoyed the raucous informality, which included back-and-forth exchanges where some freely talked over the president.

The hotter the fire, the better the sword!
President Trump, needs EXCALIBUR!
