Homeschoolers Revolt Against Republican School Choice Bill

Homeschooling families throughout the nation are voicing opposition to a Republican-sponsored school choice bill that they say will ultimately result in regulation of homeschooling in the United States. Many parents who homeschool their children, as well as their numerous local and national homeschooling organizations, are protesting the bill, introduced by Iowa Rep. Steve King (R), and calling upon the members of Congress who are its sponsors to “leave homeschooling families alone.”

School vouchers created by H.R. 610, the Choices in Education Act of 2017, “would be a slippery slope toward more federal involvement and control in homeschooling,” asserts William Estrada, director of federal relations for the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA).

“because 90% of the country either doesn’t have the resources to get their kids out of public schools,”

Nonsense, there are some excellent public schools and some very well off people SEND their kids to these schools.

The problem is that doesn’t do a thing to fix education in this country...and many of us consider that to be the top priority on this issue.

You can’t use a system that takes freedom away to teach about freedom.

“Nonsense, there are some excellent public schools”

LOL. I guess it depends whether you want your child to be a leftist doctor, or a doctor that loves the country. You’ll get the first with an ‘excellent public school’, in most cases.

Then fix the system, but why ruin the few parts that are working?

It’s like Mexico being angry about “Make America Great Again” rather than thinking about “Make Mexico Great”

I’ve known many poor people who have sent their kids to private schools.

Many will get assistance from the school, some will be asked to help out with janitorial work or serving lunch, but there’s usually a way.

Currently the private school culture might be 90% deeply concerned and involved involved parents. What happens when these schools change to 40% involved parents and 60% “going for the ride” parents?

To your question - if the kids of unconcerned parents are brats, disrupting the private schools, then the kids will be sent packing, probably to one of the (hopefully) much fewer public schools, where they can be handled better.

I just don’t see ANY WAY to improve education overall for this country if our top goal is not to break the government school monopoly - and the only way to do that is to give parents the means to do so...otherwise, very simple, nothing changes.

As long as that leftist doctor is good at what he does who cares if he is a leftist or not——I just want a good doctor.

I could not care less that the pilot of my plane is a leftist either.

School choice is going to completely ruin private schools by letting them in.

Once vouchers are available, schools will open that can meet the needs of the riffraff and they will do a better job of it than the public schools.

But what do I know, we home schooled for 13 years.

That’s fine, I DO CARE whether my kid becomes a leftist and whether kids overall are indoctrinated by leftists.

I guess we’re different on that issue.

Totally agree. We have the right to seek education. If the We the People feel compelled to provide a means for that education through taxation (taxation is the only means for the State to do anything) then it must not violate our rights otherwise.

I think public education is a worthy national interest, but it must be kept as local as possible and without monopoly.

A tip of the hat to another long term home schooler! We took a lot of heat in the early 80’s for homeschooling our five, but it was sure worth it. They are anomalies in society today, people who can read, write, do math and think things through logically.
Recently, I was served by a young cashier who counted out my change correctly in the old-fashioned way. On impulse, I asked her, “You were homeschooled, weren’t you?”
She responded, “Yes, how did you know?”

Thanks. You too. When we started, only weird people home schooled. By the time we were done, everyone knew someone that was home scholling and we were OK. Both kids have turned out to be successful both spiritually and materially. AND they are nice people.

When my son’s college roomates found out he was home schooled they were shocked. “You don’t seem like a home schooler.” ;o)

My daughter called us crying saying that she and her husband had just had their first big fight. She wanted to home school their kids and he thought public school was OK. We told her to find something else to fight over as they don’t have any kids yet. ;o)

STUPID PARENTS raise STUPID CHILDREN

The single & childless will say educate your own da*n kids.

We LOVE that your children are stupid & uneducated. You parents approve property taxes for Govt school. You want singles & others to financially support your children.

But unintended consequeces says you WILL have stupid children, you DESERVE to have stupid children, by coercing other people to raise your children.

There is NOTHING you can do about it. It is basic economics. The smart parents homeschool. But you greedy public parents CHOSE to have stupid children. Suffer.

Govt will NEVER educate your children well. No amount of tinkering will help. NEVER.

Sigh! The poor children though pay the price.

I really don’t know what you’re ranting about - nor do I know if it’s in general or to me in particular.

In any case, I’m in favor of allowing parents to choose whether they send kids to a public, private, or homeschool education without government preference via funding.

However...I support vouchers, tax credits, and charters. The goal and push must always be toward complete separation of school and state.

If you start off by taking government (taxpayer) money, there is no separation.

The best that could be hoped for would be a hands off Republican administration, you know what a dim administration would do.

Trump said getting rid of common core and bringing school choices back to the states.

DeVos , I suppose, since chosen by Trump, should be aiming for this.

I don’t know how that may effect home schoolers.

They may be getting riled up over nothing.
