As the shooter John Hinckley returns to life outside of imprisonment, it worth looking back at every thing the media got wrong that day.
At 2:27 p.m. on March 30, 1981, Secret Service agents were escorting President Ronald Reagan and White House staffers from a speech before the AFL-CIO at the Washington Hilton Hotel. About 100 people waited by the side entrance of the hotel to see the president as he walked to his limousine, which was parked about 12 feet away on T Street NW. Wearing a blue suit, Reagan smiled and waved, pausing for a split second as a reporter, Sam Donaldson of ABC News, called his name from a roped-off press area. From that same area, John W. Hinckley fired six shots. Jerry Parr, head of the president Secret Service detail, shoved a surprised Reagan into the limousine.
And with that, the assassination attempt on a sitting president, less than a decade after two failed attempts on Gerald Ford and 18 years after Lee Harvey Oswald shot John F. Kennedy, was over. But how the news spread, with misinformation seeding chaos here and abroad, presented a cautionary tale for the media, one it still struggles with today.

Of all the snafus the media made that day, I'm surprised that they forgot the biggest one of all: Bernard Shaw going on the air and saying Reagan had died from his injuries. My family and I nearly fell through the floor when, not much later, Reagan was reported to be alive.
Ever since then, whenever Shaw came on TV, we'd jokingly refer to him as "The Liar".
Of course, nowadays, the media is telling falsehoods deliberately, instead of by mistake.
The Bush Family is linked to the Reagan Assasination attempt. No joke. Look into it.
save everyone some time and post a link.
save everyone some time and post a link.
Yes please post a link.
But they have at their core 'members of the Bush family and members of the Hinckley family knew each other' and that is technically true.
I don't have time to go and find an accurate link that isn't full of conspiracy additions (that's the big problem - finding links that discuss the connection is easy, but wading through them all to see which are accurate would take time).
I remember that day. The news was a slow motion train wreck. They reported everything in a mad rush to be first. Unfortunately, more than half of it was wrong.I remember Saturday Night Live hilariously lampooned it with their “Buckwheat has been shot” skit of a few weeks later.

One thing that struck me as strange (by today's standards) was that when James Brady was declared supposedly dead, Frank Reynolds got quite sad, and recalled the "good times he had" interacting with the press secretary in social settings.
Contrast that with if some leftist takes a shot at Trump.
"Oh, trump had it coming", "You can't talk like that and not pay the price", "He just atoned for all of his sins"
Why didn't Trump soften his tone, etc."
Everyone on this board KNOWS that if some lunatic liberal went John Hinkley, the press would would be celebrating.
That is how far the liberals have come in this country since 1981.
Not one OUNCE of integrity.
The media is unbelievable scum. And liberals are even worse, if that's possible.
I *did* post a link. It’s right under the title, like every other link here at FR. Click on the words “Smithsonian Magazine”.
I apologize; I thought you were addressing me, until I looked more closely at your post. I wish I could delete my post, but I can’t see any way to do so. Again, I apologize for misunderstanding.
Seek help.
Thank you for info.
Bernard Shaw going on the air and saying Reagan had died from his injuries.
First I've ever heard of this.
Do you have a link?
Letting Hinckley out, sure doesn’t sound right to me. I hope the urge is gone. I can’t remember what his reasoning was, behind the shootings. And since James Brady died, shouldn’t he have extra sentencing for that?
Jody Foster.
Ooooops, Hinkley has the wrong plumbing for her......

He was on anti-depressants.
Oh, in THAT CASE, nothing to worry about, right?
That’s right. I remember, now.
