Here’s something the press—and Congressman Chaffetz—ignore. The President is the highest declassification authority on the planet. If he elects to discuss sensitive information outside a secure facility, he can declare it is no longer classified, and the IC must dutifully comply. Not a recommended security practice, but one of the perks of being Commander-in-Chief.
Back in the Carter years, ol’ Jimmah got tired of being called soft on national security (though he was) and leaked existence of the B-2 project, until that moment a program buried deep in the “black” world. Just like that, the fact we were working on a stealth bomber became unclassified.
