“You do - but not $7,500 per year.”

A halfway decent 2 BR apartment in a high property tax area will rent for approx. $2500 a month——they certainly are paying about $7500.00 per year in property taxes-—and they don’t get income tax benefits from it.

In my area in NJ (between Newark & Jersey City) a two-bedroom apartment could cost half of that - and the taxes on the building would be much higher than $10K (which is for a one-family home).

NJ also provides property tax rebates for tenants; it is a percentage of their rent.
