LOL! I garduated high school in Pasadena (TX) -- a suburb of Houston, down the Ship Channel and right in the middle of the petrochemical plants which line its banks. We could always tell which way the wind was blowing (even inside) -- by which plant(s) we could smell.

Back when we had the paper mill right across Pasaden Blvd from the high school, we were known far and wide as ..."Stinkadena"... '-)

If downtown Houston smells something, the wind must be from the southeast...

On a nicer note, when the wind blows just right I can smell the coffee beans being roasted east of downtown at the big coffee plant.

So by my math there are 22 horrific smells in Houston, And 1 nice one.

“How ‘bout some more beans, Mr. Taggart?”

“I’d say you’ve had enough.”

That reminds me of a story from my college years up in the Smokies of NC. There was a Champion paper mill in Canton, NC, about 30 miles away. No odor whatsoever under the vast majority of conditions, but the locals always said “if you can smell Canton it’s going to snow.” And you know what? It did, they were right, lol.

Exactly...

May they’ve introduced another toll road plan. That would stink!

I grew up in Marysville, across the St Clair river from Petrolia, Ontario. Dow, union Carbide British petroleum, etc. Second largest refinery in the world. We could always tell when the wind was from the east. And navigating around town was foolproof due to the dull glow of the burn-off stacks to the east.
