Shasta and Don Pedro look to be near critical, meanwhile Lake Mead is waaaay too low and still sending massive amounts of water into California.

“Nothing we can make can withstand such force for an extended period of time.”

not true, they can plug the spillway with CO2

From my easy chair on the other side of the continent...

They’ve been sending the maximum flow through the main spillway for a few hours and the flow through the emergency spillway has been reduced to near nothing.
So they should be able to run the main spillway at the max for 4 or 5 more hours and have the lake level down enough so they can fill in the main spillway with rock and concrete before the level got to the top again.
Then they can let water out the main spillway fast enough to keep the level safe- below the emergency spillway- henceforward.
So, it looks good.

This is the quintessential example of pennies wasted resulting in absolute catastrophe.

I seem to remember a certain billions in "stimulus" money being spent by a certain preezie with the initials BO that was supposed to take care of stimulus projects such as this dam. Where did that money go?

Don’t see much of a way to repair the spillway at this time, since it has cut a huge hole to the side of it now.

They’re letting out, 100,000 cfs, but there is still 50,000 cfs coming into the lake

You’re welcome. They are re-running video of the dam due to it being dark there now, but are live streaming evacuation and official reports.

It looks doable IMO: National Guard, helicopters.
It will take 1000 times the effort a timely maintenance repair would have- and only last a fraction as long.
Though there may have been damage to the dam’s foundation from the main spillway’s hole.
Anyway, without a repaired main spillway the dam will definately fail come the next rains.

Stimulus money? LOL.

Was working for a large County Engineering Department at the time.

Keep in mind, the largest county in the State, with the most roadways to maintain.

Know what our stimulus project paid for?

A 1/8” overlay on 3/4 of a mile of two lane highway.

A friend in Redding says they are releasing lots of extra water from Lake Shasta also. A warm rain this week could also melt the snow at higher elevations.

One problem seems to be that the Feather River below the dam can only handle ~100,000 cfs without flooding. The res is full and any time now that the inflow is above 100k, the outlet has to follow to avoid breaching the dam until the res has buffer volume available.
