The California Department of Water Resources issued a sudden evacuation order shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday for residents near the Oroville Dam in northern California, warning that the dam’s emergency spillway would fail in the next 60 minutes.

The Oroville Dam is the highest in the nation.

Oroville in pictures:

The theory

8 hours ago, taking a big bite out of that ridge

Evacuation area, which was ordered assuming that safety ridge will hold (and the dam doesn't collapse!)

Another view of the situation

Another view, 7 hours ago.

Beginning Thursday we have a week solid of rain in the forecast. Who knows how much after that?

I think the theory about the ridge is good -- as long as you don't have major damage to the main concrete spillway. :-(

Is this in an area where water could have been directed to the farmers being harmed by the drought? Or, is this water headed to the ocean, directly?

I believe it could go either way.

I read an article stating that much of the water from NorCal goes through the delta to the central valley or at least it was supposed to before they started catering to non native fish in addition to non native people.

“President now has the authority to activate the National guard to deal with emergencies regardless of the Governor.”

Greeneyes, can you fill me in? I studied up on Stafford Act, if it’s been replaced I need to know! Thanks

Even once the repairs are complete, there’s still this issue we need to resolve: it appears the original spillway is too narrow to start with. They may have to rebuild the spillway with greater width, especially given the height of Oroville Dam itself.

Look how massive that hole in the spillway is! Don't know how they can fix it before the next series of storms, which are forecast to begin on Thursday and continue for at least a week straight.

Thank you for the photos. We are taking a break from our homeschooling day to discuss this. The pictures helped my son understand the situation tremendously.

Think mere water doesn't have some serious power ?

The part of the hole where the guy on the right is standing looks to be about 10' deep, and those 'tiles' in the neighborhood of 2' thick by whatever their planar dimensions are.
By the looks of it, about a dozen of them were ripped up and tossed further down the spillway .. imagine one of those comin' at ya !

The right side of the hole appears to be about 30' deep, with lots of unconsolidated material in the egress area bottom right.

Yes, thanks for the pitchas.

They shoulda built two spillways so they'd be able to shut one down to FIX GIANT HOLES, etc. "One equals none, and two equals one."

Also they should have made the spillway(s) wider and have some of those giant concrete obstacles to break the momentum of the water right from the start and then some riprap and stuff after that.

That'll be, uh, $34,000,000.00, Governor.

Spillway is toast. This shot was taken not too many hours after the one with the men inside the hole inspecting it.

Just saw a news report where one official said that if the dam fails at the auxiliary spillway end, we'd probably get a 30-foot wall of water moving downstream.

I'm guessing that means that if the main part of the dam fails... fuhgeddaboudit!
