MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Gov. Robert Bentley has appointed Luther Strange to replace Jeff Sessions in the U.S. Senate after Sessions was selected by President Donald Trump to be the country's next Attorney General.

...

Prior to being appointed to the U.S. Senate to replace Sessions, Strange served as the 47th Attorney General of Alabama. He held that title from 2011 to 2017.

“I am greatly honored and humbled to accept the appointment to Alabama’s Senate seat vacated by Senator Jeff Sessions,” said Attorney General Luther Strange. “Senator Sessions’ commitment to public service is nearly unparalleled in Alabama history and his departure from the Senate leaves tremendous shoes to fill. I pledge to the people of Alabama to continue the same level of leadership as Jeff Sessions in consistently fighting to protect and advance the conservative values we all care about.”

Strange also served as the court-appointed Coordinating Counsel for the Gulf Coast States in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill case that affected the Gulf Coast shoreline of Alabama.

Strange was born in Birmingham in 1953. He attended Tulane University, is married and has two children.

So who now for AL AG?

Heard this morning maybe Cam Ward? Bentley gets to choose. Very interesting.

Doesn’t sound like a real affair.

I would beg to differ. The fact that his wife of 50 years filed for divorce suggests that this was something more than a mutual admiration society.

The “scandals” sound like BS. If the Governor committed adultery, that’s his wife’s problem.

We knew it was coming. Bentley might’ve been better off appointing a caretaker to the seat to avoid an appearance of impropriety. Strange was going to run for the vacancy, anyhow. The question now is with Bentley’s appointment of Steve Marshall to Strange’s AG vacancy, if he will go soft on the investigation into Bentley’s alleged wrongdoings. He may ride it out to the end of his term in 2019. I’ve heard some concerns in the past over Lt Gov. Kay Ivey, so there may not be a burning desire to move her up and give her a leg up for next year’s primaries.

Did the Governor actually do anything wrong? Seems to me like the “impropriety” is a whole lot of nothing and that the investigation has been dragged out for an absurdly long time.

Probably did nothing that Dems don’t routinely do and never get punished for, although that’s no excuse. The whole thing seems a convoluted mess that began with a sex affair (although as with all sex affairs, it’s usually the covering up that becomes the bigger problem). I’ve not fully delved into it myself.
