I noticed many of the comments on the WaPo page went down this path, too.

Now THAT is news! :-)

From the perspective of a third grade teacher, in a great district, the classroom with “special” needs child and their adult aide who overtalks while a lesson is given is NOT conducive to concentration! A teacher explaining arithmetic must hold the attention of 30 kids—a feat in and of itself. I do not believe anyone benefits from a noisy, chaotic room during basic learning. This is not my story. I was told it. Add to this a suicidal youngster so the protocol requires teacher to exit in middle of lesson for a meeting with principal, etc.

My classes of 32 kids were quiet, respected our teacher, feared getting in trouble with authorities and parents. It was unheard of to interrupt a teacher's lesson. The vice-principal dealt with parents if necessary. We ALL moved through the years passing our tests, learning, and playing our hearts out during recess and after school. Hardly any homework in grades 1-6, too.

“Very wrong. Let me present you just a bit of information. Thirty years of study shows us that when ALL students are learning together they ALL do better.”

I’m having a lot of trouble responding to that in some productive way. First it gave me an acute case of Tourette’s that had to be suppressed, then it made me want to act like a bully and launch a salvo of insulting comments regarding intelligence. Finally I just froze, fingers poised over the keyboard, mouth agape.

It is as though someone had announced that controlling malaria by spraying for mosquitos was a bad thing, or that the Hillbilly Whorehopper and the Negro from Nairobi were great presidents. Without wanting to seem overly confrontational, that notion is not merely wrong, it is obstreperously, obnoxiously, offensively, risibly, dangerously wrong.

So-called “inclusive education” always and only interferes with the education of the rest of the kids. Not only has there never been any other outcome, it is ridiculous to suspect for an instant that there ever could be any other outcome.

Data supporting your position are as credible as the “data” that “support” the wackadoodle lunacy of anthropogenic global warming.

Sorry.

“Teachers plan their lessons to meet each student’s learning needs.”

And I’ll bet they’re thrilled to take on the extra work.

“Teachers teach in small groups that can change as the students’ needs change.”

So, we’re going to have four times as many teachers? Or are the other small groups left to pick their noses while the teacher “teaches” one small group?

“Teachers teach the same content in different ways.”

Are you kidding? Teachers aren’t smart or educated enough to teach content even in a single way.

“Teachers work with other adults in the school to help meet each student’s needs.”

And they are thrilled to take on the extra work in their copious free time. Wow. I hadn’t realized what a bunch of saints these hypothetical teachers are.

“Why inclusive education?”

Because we are hell-bent on committing cultural and national suicide as quickly as possible?

“Studies show”

The only study I trust is the one showing that 99% of all studies are bull crap.

“that students with and without disabilities in inclusive schools:…do better in reading and math”

If that seems true, it is because those schools move so slowly through the material that there is less to learn, so regular kids get higher grades for doing less.

“benefit from the friendships they form”

Pie in the sky. If that happens, it’s so rare that the good it does is overwhelmed by the harm.

“learn to value differences.”

What kind of leftard garbage is that? What next, you gonna tell me that “diversity is our strength?” Diversity is where nations go to die.

No nation can excel unless it allows the best—the smartest, the strongest, the most motivated—to surge ahead of the pack.

I really rally really can't figure out why this snowflake is butt-hurt

Its a flat lie that any American school would reject her son

Pubic schools are MANDATED to educate every child, and mainstreaming in preferred, often with a 504 plan of accommodations or a full IEP and a stable of TAXPYER paid special services: speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychological counseling

But if that can't work, then the school district has to pay for his education in an alternative setting- usually a VERY expensive therapeutic school- paid for AT SCHOOL DISTRICT TAPAYER EXPENSE

How do I know this?
Been through all of it with an ADHD autism spectrum kid
In fact, it was a private school that rejected him for pre-K
which we then found at a church school, but once in public school we got every courtesy, every accommodation mandated by law, full hearings with all administrators, teachers, therapists

and - once we paid for a full private neuropsych eval that pinpointed the areas of his deficiencies and delays (superior to the exam the school would have provided) - our son was educated in a regular classroom with a full IEP and supporting service by PT, OT and speech therapy

The program for his needs was not so good in middle school which is battleground of migrants and ghetto kids, so I have home-schooled him since 7th grade and he is just about to finish his HS diploma!

The doctor told us it was a shame we didn't live in Baltimore because that city sends all their special needs kids like our son to a very expensive PRIVATE SCHOOL at taxpayer expense (but we just couldn't swallow the $30K a year tuition)

Snowflakes assumptions and rants about how Betsy Devos is somehow going to deprive her kid of an educations is more liberal lunacy. Sheer lunacy and misinformation

And since her global family can live where they chose, they might want to live in Baltimore which will pay for her son's private school and see if obamacare’s snowflake plan for jobless globe trotters pays for his services at Kennedy Krieger

I have accomodated autistic children, those with Tourettes, amputees and kids with many other disabilities successfully. But, most importantly, they contributed as much to their success as I did and in that context I'm sure they enriched the total classroom environment.

In the context of a performance based training class where the student cannot communicate or perform any semblance of the required work, I couldn't disagree with you more.

Safety around lethal voltages was the biggest concern. Imagine someone with involuntary muscle spasms sticking meter leads into a 440V power panel. Another issue was the quality of the training time for all the students. Other students lost 5-10 minutes of lab time each session to allow accomodations.

If the special ed students had been allowed to do this after school, I would have felt that the other 26 kids would have gotten more out of the regular time class and they would have all gotten everything possible out of the class.

Her student did not earn a 4.0. Her student also did not learn what the class is set up to teach. Her student also prevented two people who might have learned those skill from having the opportunity to do so.

This, we are assured, somehow makes everything better.

I used to be a teacher. Mrs. Mountain is currently a teacher.

I know the score. Not every class is for everybody. That's why we have (or had) remedial, regular, and honors classes. Putting a student who is physically incapable of doing the work required in a particular class is a waste of resources. Putting a student who is mentally incapable of doing the work required in a particular class may be a waste of resources, and is certainly a dodgy proposition.

My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS and had trouble learning to speak.

He went to an OT and we were taught some sign language so he could start to communicate with us and that helped. We had to keep an eye on his teachers and assistants and pull him out of classes that were causing trouble. We were totally involved with his education and would not accept their excuses.

As he went through school, he was sent to special classes and eventually we got some medication and he was able to focus and become a better student.

He eventually decided to take himself off the medication as he was able to develop skills to accommodate his abilities. He is very smart and adaptable even as he still has issues with fine motor skills.

Over the years, he got OT and IEP’s in which he exceeded all expectations. Going into Boy Scouts and JROTC he became a leader and gained respect of his peers.

When he graduated, his grades got him a scholarship and he earned his Eagle in 2015. He brought his special needs worker to represent all the workers and gave him a mentor pin as a thank you for helping him.

Today he is going to school to become an engineer. He is a success and will continue to be because of people like your wife. He still has some difficulties but in my speech at his Eagle Court of Honor, he is an overcomer because of his persistence.

Thank your wife for his sake as he is a success story because of people like her.

Thank you very much!

Hats off to your son. Eagle Scout (I was a Star) is one heck of an achievement, great for him!

And I will pass on the very kind words to her.

I agree with you.

One of the responses my postings got is a pure textbook response that denies reality. Maybe it would work in a mainstream class but certainly not where, unlike an English Literature class, a mistake could be deadly.

We looked at a house a few years ago that was being sold by a new microsofter who was moving across the country. Kid had problems. They took the house off the market and moved back because the local school district here had a one on one tutor and the child was essentially homeschooled. Couldn’t get that our west.

This, we are assured, somehow makes everything better.

Those dang special ed kids, always taking resources from neurotypical kids considering those special ed kids have all the same opportunities, oh wait they don't. No I guess it is ok to sacrifice the special needs kids because, well you know, they won't have jobs and such.

Such narrow minded thinking.

Sticking your head in the sand hurts everyone, swallow some pride and educate yourself. Heck, you just might learn something.

You left out the more important part of my post:

Her student did not earn a 4.0. Her student also did not learn what the class is set up to teach. Her student also prevented two people who might have learned those skill from having the opportunity to do so.

Would you care to address any of that?

“Sticking your head in the sand hurts everyone, swallow some pride and educate yourself. Heck, you just might learn something.”

Stop acting like a troll. You have nothing to teach people here. We already know everything you know, plus why you are wrong.

You only know what you know. It is your place to learn the rest of what we know.

Out.
