A year that saw arguably the five greatest championship game performances of all time should have helped right the ship for ESPN, and at the very least stopped the trend of massive subscriber losses which have plagued the Bristol-based sports giant for the last few years. Well, that did not happen, and ESPN appears to be a sinking ship, dragging parent company Disney down with it.
Bloomberg reports that ESPN badly hurt Disneys first quarter sales, falling well short of projections.
According to The Wrap, Cable networks, particularly ESPN, have been an albatross on Disneys stock price even as the companys two other major prongs, movies and theme parks, continue to perform well. As cheaper TV alternatives began to proliferate, ESPN hemorrhaged subscribers during the course of 2016 and is now at less than 88 million, compared with a peak of 100.1 million in 2011. At an estimated $7 per subscriber, that dip has been a substantial hit to Disney, especially considering media networks made up 49 percent of Disneys profits during fiscal 2016.

I’m telling you that by the end of Trump’s first term Hollyweird will go bankrupt and the MSM completely destroyed and by the end of Trump’s second term the liberal scourge and islam will no longer be a threat to our western values. MAGA, MEGA and DEUS VULT!
That’s what happens when a “sports channel” becomes political......serves ‘em right IMO.
Another one bites the dust.
The end of Disney can’t come too soon.
Maybe if ESPN and pro-sports drop the diversity mongering they will stop driving viewers and fans away.
Sports is or was a refuge from politics and the war between the Sexes, but that Refuge appears gone.
I don’t think they will turn things around.
In 5 or 10 years we will see a US media culture devastated and then forever changed.
Just my opinion. It’s another Kapperdick hit! Plus, folks are just tired of the far left network.
Sorry, I got take a knee on this one . . . lol
This is really surprising...amazing even.
I mean WHO doesn’t tune in too ESPN wanting too hear political commentary from sports casters?
7*12*12=$1,008,00.00 that is how much fewer dollars Disney took in since their peak of 100 million subscribers. That is also per year.
Listening to Fox Business and they’ve said ESPN’s revenues fell precipitously in the quarter Oct-Dec ‘16. Kapperdick fallout! Coincidence? I think not!
Make that $1,008,000,000.00
It used to be that you could talk about sports and the weather, as a way to have things to talk about that wouldn't lead to conflict.
Now, between the politicization of sports, and Climate Change as a weather topic, there is very little left that won't lead to conflict.
Vivo Cristo Rey!
Long Live Christ, the King!
Plus reduced ad revenue
Maybe they should have done sports, not politics.
If they do as you suggest I would again be a sports nut. The way it is now I watch only hockey & tennis and hockey is starting to swing left. The sport of tennis which you would think of as the most left leaning is still smart enough to keep the politics & gender crap out. And as a tennis player I love it.
