Have NOT had that personal experience, thankfully! But I’ve seen both the good and bad in NYC, and that’s definitely not a reflection on the outlying areas of New York City (including the wonderful Staten Island borough.)
Giuliani cleaned up a lot of bad stuff... Too bad his free-spirited dalliances stained his accomplishments.

You are right about Rudy. I love him now and after 9/11, even before.
But he closed down all the strip joints on staten island (er, not that that was a bad thing!) while he cheated left and right. More than people know.
As for Staten Island, it is definitely conservative, but I drove a cab overnight for about 4 years altogether,and I was SHOCKED at all the fruits running around in Italian neighborhoods.
THey weren’t the flamboyant types, and I wouldn’t have known they were gay except for the DISGUSTING kissing in the back. And picking up guys at guy’s houses and seeing them give a kiss before leaving. VOMIT!!!
I think after dark EVERYWHERE is a different place, at least a little.
Worse, I got hit on about 7 times by gays.
Was offered sex a dozen times easy by hooker (said no).
Wu Tang Klan wanted me to deal narcotics for them out of the cab.
Had a gun and knife pulled and a bag used.
