Trump's First Week: For Many In Arizona, It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This
LA Times ^ | 1.31.17 3:00 | Nigel Duara

Aross the massive mall parking lot from the Red Lobster, Rush Limbaugh’s radio show blared from the speakers of a silver sedan, idling near Party City with its windows down.

The nominal topic Monday was the alleged liberal assault on NFL quarterback Tom Brady, but Limbaugh had long since moved on: to a border wall, suspicions of nationwide protests and President Trump’s response to the threat posed by foreigners.

Nodding approvingly in the driver’s seat was Doyle MacCree, 84, of Goodyear, a conservative suburb west of Phoenix.

Here, more than 120 miles from the border, Arizona voters outraged with President Obama’s executive orders that welcomed the foreign-born to America are delighted with Trump’s first week in office, when his actions seemed to have done the opposite.

Trump has ordered federal funding withheld from cities that provide sanctuary to immigrants in the country illegally, demanded Congress pay for the immediate construction of a 1,900-mile border wall and banned travel to the U.S. by citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries, as a way, he says, to keep terrorists at bay.

The wall is just the start of it,” MacCree said. He’s looking ahead to the potential for violence on the border over the question of who gets in and who doesn’t.

Perhaps Trump hasn’t yet gone far enough, voters here say, but give it time. He has uncomplicated solutions to what they see as uncomplicated problems.

Arizona, with its lengthy border with Mexico, was the epicenter of a fierce debate over immigration long before the rest of the country, prodded by Trump, took up the issue.

The state’s traditional libertarian-leaning conservatism has been tempered in recent years by a rapidly growing Latino population; Trump still carried Arizona in November with nearly 50% support.

Interesting. At least one journalist shows a little integrity by at least getting out of the bubble long enough to find out why the rest of the country voted for President Trump

It’s a question that needs to be answered.

AZ is going to go blue in the not too distant future thanks to immigration. McCain may be the last GOP Senator they elect. Sheriff Joe, famous for being tough on illegals, was voted out of office in 2016 in favor of a liberal Democrat.

You have got to wonder what has been going in on the minds of AZ Republicans over the last 25 years. They were clearly and plainly in the path of the reconquista. Many were refugees from the immigration invasion in California. You would think self preservation would have slapped some sense into these people.

It just defies logic and common sense. McCain is a carpetbagging opportunist and backstabber, certainly not a conservative by any measure.

“AZ is going to go blue in the not too distant future thanks to immigration...”

Maybe, maybe not. Part of it depends on whether Trump is able to get the Illegals out of there - and that will slow things down. Next is to have Hispanics learn English...after that they vote close to mainstream America.

In 2014, every statewide candidate, in the now-Texas Lt. Governor (Dan Patrick), who sounded like Trump when talking illegal immigration, got 40% to 45% of the Hispanic vote, with all of the Republican candidates winning by around 20 points. And that was when the Dems really thought they had a chance of at least making Texas competitive, if not flipping it. The keys are to get rid of the Illegals, slow down legal immigration from the Third World, and Americanize Hispanics...at that point, as was the case in Texas 2 years ago, they are very little help to the Democrats.

McCain has lots of money and name recognition.

The local media (Progressive, need I say) love him and promote him.

Kelli Ward got about 42% of the vote in the primary, but could not topple him.

Most people do not pay attention more than a month before the election.

McCain shifts to conservative a few months before the election, lies a lot, then shits back.

Hopefully, he will not run for another term...

Can’t get rid of that old McCain. He will have to die before he gets defeated. I did vote for Kelly, but she did not have a chance against the pilot who thrice trashed planes in WWII.

Flake will be on the line next election. Got his son off after basically murdering 20 dogs. Jerk. Heat exhaustion.

He destroyed 5 aircraft during his flying days.

McCain’s mother is 101, probably going to be re-electing him for years to come.

Retired “snowbirds” from the upper Midwest that vote in two states. They are in Arizona when the elections roll around. Most are retired union workers. That and illegal alien voters. We’re in trouble here.

Which backs up Trump’s comments on voter fraud.

I’ve always voted against McCain in the primaries. But when it comes to the general, I can’t support a Dem. I don’t think we’d bounce back from it, as close as this electorate is. Look around us...All Blue.

This time, I will back Ward again, financially and with my time, against Flake. I think we can do it. Flake has been more open about his support for illegals, and that can make the difference.

Why does McCain win? Well, he’s historic. People gravitate towards the powerful, and in Arizona, he’s the most powerful politician around. It’s like anything else..people like to win. However, many of us see through him. We know he’s a democrat without the title. But, we have a tall hill to climb. We need help. Ward needs money. If you’ve got a few extra dollars, help her out. We can topple Flake, but not without a flood of TV time. TV time costs money.
