The Joe Friday look is out. Tattoos, turbans and beards are in.
Police departments, compelled by a hiring crisis and eager for a more diverse applicant pool, are relaxing traditional grooming standards and getting away from rules that used to require a uniformly clean-shaven, 1950s look.
More officers are on the job with tattoos inked on their forearms, beards on their chins or religious head coverings like hijabs and turbans in place of — or tucked beneath — their blue caps.
“My turban is a part of me,” said Mandeep Singh, among 160 Sikhs in the New York City Police Department who last month were allowed to wear navy blue turbans in place of the standard-issue police caps. “This opens a gate for other potential candidates who felt they could not be a police officer because they would have to choose either the job or their faith.”
That followed a 2014 move by the St. Paul, Minnesota, police to create a special hijab for its first female Somali Muslim officer. …

I find it a little offensive that officer dress as thought they are patrolling Fallujah instead of a US city. They wear combat gear and behave combatively. Whatever happened to officer Malloy and Officer Reed?
Furthermore, I am entertained that the average officer now has a pistol, a back up pistol, a taser, pepper spray, perhaps a knife, a M16 or M4, and a shotgun. I went a defended this country with just one weapon, crappy body armor, and an ROE far more restrictive than what cops abide by to deal with us.
The religious requirements of Sikhs are one thing. Regular Americans’ looking slovenly is a different thing.
I would give a lot for a Reed/Malloy and Friday/Gannon type police force.

No group has suffered more under Islam than the Sikhs. They may wear Turbans but they do not bow to Mecca nor do they cut off people’s heads. They may look exotic but they are in fact a warrior people forced to become this way by Islam.
I agree completely re the Sikhs - but I don’t care. You want to be a uniformed LEO? Then short hair, no tats, no piercings, no facial hair, 5’8” or taller, 170 pounds minimum with no more than 15% body fat.
Weapons and health qualification every year.
You’re applying “norms” in an age where the left has tried (with great success) to destroy them. How do you ban tattoos in an environment where “his husband” and “her wife” are tossed around as if we’ve always normalized sexual perverts?
My son is a LEO, his department allows the men to have beards in the month of December only and the men must pay a $100 fee to do so. Money collected goes to buy Christmas presents for needy kids.
A big draw back for him is that his 4 year old daughter refuses to “give him kisses” while he has the beard.
He tells her ,”grampa has a beard and you give him(me) kisses”.
Her answer: Well, that’s different.
She’s so lovable.
