Nobody who is not a citizen has a *right* to come here.
Some time ago, there was a death in our family. A relative who lives in Canada as a legal resident (green card in Canada) had a US passport that had expired.
While still being a US citizen, this relative was NOT allowed to come back into the country for the funeral because the passport was expired.
A US CITIZEN ***NOT*** allowed back in their own country!
While illegals stay here and protest every day, and while non citizens are given permission to come in.
If I crossed over into Canada without my passport even for the afternoon, I would not be able to enter back into the US, or I would be detained until they figured out what my fate would be. They warn you to NOT leave the country without your passport for this very reason.

Oh wow metmom! Quite a few years back (a couple of years after 911) a business partner & I were crossing the Canadian boarder back to the U.S. (Washington state) from Surrey, B.C. Both of us had expired passports so we made sure to have our WA drivers lic. & birth certificates before we left the country and decided not to present our passports to avoid any suspicion! After presenting licenses and birth certificates the boarder agent asked if we had any other proof of citizenship?! We sheepishly responded that we had passports but they were expired! “Perfect!” He said, “the document may expire but your citizenship doesn’t!” And across the boarder we went!! “Good to know” we told him!
