26 killings in 25 days: Baltimore police search for solutions to year's lethal start

As Baltimore struggles with a deadly start to the year, the mayor and police commissioner on Wednesday called on help from the community, other city agencies, prosecutors and even the president to help slow a pace of one homicide a day.

Twenty-six people have been killed in the year's first 25 days. Police Commissioner Kevin Davis tried to assure residents that the department is doing everything it can, allocating more officers to patrol and redeploying gang and other special units to areas of the city where violence is the worst.

The past two years have seen an unusual surge in violent crime that traces back to the unrest that followed the death of Freddie Gray from injuries sustained in the back of a police van in April 2015. The number of homicides in Baltimore jumped from 211 in 2014 to 344 in 2015 - the most per capita in the city's history.

I spoke with a police officer of a DOJ-run police force.

Here’s how it works. Obama working with local black politicians sued via the DOJ bunch of cities. Rather than blow millions defending, they entered consent decrees.

Remember the legal leve of proof is disparate impact. So if blacks are stopped or arrested or convicted more than whites, that’s disparate impact regaroess of who is doing crimes.

Once in control, the Feds demand camera. Cameras on the officers. Cameras in the cars. Cameras on their tasers.

The other officers are required to rat out anything that’s a possible offense. If they don’t, they are written up.

Every removal of gun or taser requires a two-page report.

Morale plumits. Those running the show essentially say to officers on the street do as littile possible and CYA.

If you don’t, you could be prosecuted and wind up jail. Cops don’t do well in jail.

So Chicago, Baltimore, etc essentially have handed over “high crime areas” to the criminals.

To reverse this you’d have to undo all the fed court and other interference into local policing.

Part of that story involved the relocation of only juvenile males. For some reason, the adult males weren’t relocated along with the younger ones. Transportation of the full-grown males may have been a problem. I’ll try to find a link for that.

With a DA like Mosby waiting to prosecute police officers for her political gain, why would Baltimore cops be interested in cracking down?

A liberal told me to stop the violence we must study the causes but the NRA owns the republicans and wont allow the studies

A convoluted non sensical way to blame republicans.

If only obama was still prez he could create a new government agency to study and perform root cause analyses to determine exactly why the homeless crackhead robbed the liquor store

Obviously the violence is due to the “Trump Effect”. These folks have legitimate concerns that their LGBTQ rights might get trampled on. Can we bame them?

Oh, there are solutions.

Ofcourse, you can't have solutions until you are honest about the problem.

“They were treated like sh** by the city, why should they care?”

Stupid statement! Most all police officers are men of honor, who place there lives in danger, daily. You do them a disservice by your comment.

They certainly are, but the Ferguson effect is very real.

In some cities, criminals are being paid not to commit crimes. What could possibly go wrong with that strategy?
