McConnell all but rules out filibuster change

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Friday all but ruled out the possibility of a change to the filibuster rule this year.

McConnell made his comment in an interview with The Hill one day after President Trump said he wants Senate Republicans to strip Democrats of the power to filibuster Supreme Court nominees if they attempt to block his pick.

“Senate rules are a matter for the Senate and a lot of other people have opinions,” McConnell said.

“We’ve already adopted the rules for this Congress at the beginning of the year. Basically we didn’t adopt any because in the Senate rules are permanent, unlike the House which every two year adopts a new set of rules. We don’t.”

Permanent, in this case, doesn’t mean never changing. It just means they automatically continue last year’s rules unless the senators actively change them. The House’s rules are wiped clean at the beginning of each Congress so have to actively vote on new rules even if they are the same as last year’s rules.

McConnell is a a$$. Krazy Tim Kaine promised democrats would eliminate the filibuster for SC nominees - remember, they were planning on winning and running the Senate right now.

Here's a link to him making the pledge.

Whenever democarats again retake the Senate, they will cut off the filibuster instantly, regardless of the whining from turkey boy.

You misunderstand, perhaps. The Dems did away with the filibuster for all presidential nominees with the exception of the Supreme Court.

Those are the rules the current Senate is observing. Nothing has changed.

Okay, you've jogged my memory a bit. Yes, I think I do remember that it was for all appointees except for the Supreme Court. But here is what I am thinking. The Democrats Nuked the filibuster first, so I say let's do it back to them. Getting two Supreme Court nominees through would be worth it.

Last I read, sometime in December, that if the vote came to the floor of the Senate, there were 8 republicans that would vote to not change the filibuster. It is more than just McConnell.

That is true, but I am convinced that had we taken out McConnell, the rest of them would not be so determined to defy their constituencies.

I still want revenge on McConnell for what he helped to do to McDaniel in Mississippi.

This guarantees 100% that the democrats will close ranks and block whoever Trump picks. Any attempt to shame them on delaying the nomination will be met with the reply of how long the Republicans blocked Garland’s nomination. The democrats would end this stupid rule the minute they get a majority in the Senate.

Just do it and be done with it.

And this is exactly the situation as I see it.

The Senate rules were permanent until Harry Reid decided to unilaterally change them.

The only way for any of President Trump’s Supreme Court nominees to get past Chuckie Schumer’s promised filibuster is for McConnell to invoke the Reid Rule and unilaterally abolish Supreme Court filibusters.

I knew that McConnell did not have the balls to do what needs to be done but he could at least pretend he is willing to grow a pair.

The Dems did away with the filibuster for all presidential nominees with the exception of the Supreme Court.

The ONLY reason that Harry Reid did not unilaterally abolish Supreme Court filibusters is because there were no vacancies on the Court at the time. There is no question whatsoever that the next time there is a Democrat President and a Democrat Senate the Democrats will unilaterally abolish the Supreme Court filibuster the second that they have an opportunity to cram another far left-wing liberal appointment onto the Court.

IMO, establishment Republicans risk themselves with this behavior.

All #45 has to do IMO is list problem politicians on both sides and Zi think there would be enough voters to replace them with better people.

If the rules are the same as when the Dems were in control, the Dems can’t filibuster Trump’s picks. No change is required.

Yeah, there are a lot of ways this can be worked out.
My favorite is to keep the fillibuster, but to revert to the old style of active fillibuster.

Really? So the rules have always said majority vote on all nominations but the Supreme Court?

Mitch, you are a dumb@ss...or you think we are.

Agree with you completely, except for the exception part. Reid didn’t except SC nominees; he just never had the opportunity to use the nuclear option on one.

If the Dems get the Senate back, they’ll do it the first day. Think of the gains we’ll miss out on clinging to this.

The Hill has recently been as reliable as the WAPO. McConnell has never been my favorite, but he may not have to pull the trigger. Look at the other articles calling the Democrat Senators spinless and lining up to roll over for Trump.
Only time will tell what we get and there’s precious little we can do to change the balance in the next two years. 2018 will expose several RINO’s, but the Democrats have a huge slate to defend.

When the budget comes along, Trump won’t be cooperating with the rinos and the CRs are going to mean small government. The rinos like McConnell are going to have to give in sometime. Trump could also do recess appointments for SC justices.
We don’t want a repeat of losers like papa bushie’s Souter because McConnell and Schumer are on the same team now.
