From my poll worker experience (wanted to see for myself) the voter day checks and integrity of poll workers was excellent. But there was no questioning about if folks on the voting list belonged on it. That's potentially even more of a problem with mail-in absentee votes and early in person voting at a central location.
What I'd like to see is any non-citizens who voted being deported for good. That's a serious crime.
Absolutely.
As a poll worker for 20+ years, I second your opinion. In our machine system the only way to cheat is to be on the books when you should not be, or to have the machines rigged to change votes. These are self contained machines, not hooked up to the internet or any outside entity. That means the programming would have to be done at the machine storage facility before they are delivered to the polling places. The small town in which I serve has five districts with two machines per district. There are 565 municipalities in New Jersey. I tried to find the total number of districts (not congressional districts- there are 12 of those, but districts within towns/counties) but there was too much to wade through.
Point being that large scale cheating is very difficult in our area, though not impossible. It is much easier in paper ballot locations with RAT election supervisors, where they can have the premarked ballots ready to go in the back room of the union hall, for a quick switch-off between the polling places and the municipal building.
