During his inauguration address on Friday, Donald Trump released an image that had nothing to do with crowd size or marchers: his official White House portrait.
The picture, which features prominently in the White House websites biography of Trump, depicts the President in front of what appears to be a green-screen image of the White House. In his characteristic red tie, Trump leans forward, no smile, with an aggressive arguably menacing stare.
The image struck us as unusual, so we reached out to some professional photographers and presidential scholars to help us unpack why. The photo is odd, they agreed, especially when compared with past Presidents photos. The problems with Trumps photo: unflattering lighting and threatening posing
Trumps posture and slight lean forward portray the President as an aggressive figure, says Tamzin Smith, a professional photographer who specializes in portraiture. The catchlights in the lower part of Trumps eyes those bright white dots just beneath his pupils indicate hes being lit from below. For a portrait like this, thats a bizarre lighting choice, she said.

In the present situation, I think it’s about right. He’s saying, “I do not suffer fools. So don’t think it will be business as usual.”
The title under that Eagle: “I AM smiling”
No smile? Does the author not see there is an obvious smile playing at the edges of the mouth? The photo encapsulates both head and heart of Trump. The powerfulness of eyes that notice everything and can see right thru the bull like the piercing gaze of a predator, which the photographer cleverly emphasized. The mouth that reflects the warmth of someone ready to reach out and shake hands in friendship. It’s an outstanding photo. What are these people smoking?
I like it! He means business and it shows!
Finally, there is a strong Alpha male in America’s corner!
(mixed metaphor, I guess. Sorry!)
So sad that the ‘girlie boys’ of the lib party have to wear ‘pink laced panties’ and walk around with them in a wad all the time, and those ‘squeaky’ little voices, and their ‘pinkie finger’ sticking up like an elegant Lady used to do back in the Victorian days...
Oh to have a REAL MAN to see leading our country is just amazing!!!
Appears to be lighted that way to emphasis the White House over his left shoulder. It is called being humble and showing respect for the office.
There is more depth to everything President Trump does than meets the eye. The portrait is one more subliminal message to the left to stay out of the way or face the consequences. He hires professionals; the choice of lighting was no accident.
I’ve done photography myself as well as worked with professional fashion photographers. “Uplighting” is not in the least bit odd or uncommon. It’s intended to minimize unflattering facial shadows.
Given that this “point” is BS, everything that follows is suspect as well.
They just can’t help themselves, bless their hearts.
Who gives a flip?
Um.... So?
I think these two portraits are an amazing illustration of a leader, a superb man of action, a General Patton even, and I say that with all due great respect, and some kind of outrageous insult to American men who could not defeat a single square of sopping wet toilet paper.
And to think that this tinkerbell is SO ARROGANT that he ran for president, and was actually mad and insulted that he kept having to appear in the kiddie debates.
The raptor.
AWESOME!
Love it! He looks like a lion.
Yeah! He’s supposed to be smiling, or he’ll scare the children.
You can really see his Combover In That pic
