Top 10 U.S. Sanctuary Cities Face Roughly $2.27 Billion In Cuts By Trump Policy

U.S. President Donald Trump's attempt to strip municipalities of federal dollars for shielding illegal immigrants threatens $2.27 billion in annual funds for the nation's 10 largest cities, a Reuters analysis of federal grants found.

Trump plans to make good on his campaign pledge to block federal funding to states and cities where local law enforcement refuse to report undocumented immigrants they encounter to federal authorities, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said.

"The American people are no longer going to have to be forced to subsidize this disregard for our laws,” Spicer said.

Spicer said an executive order signed by Trump on Wednesday directs the Secretary of Homeland Security to look at federal funding to cities to figure out "how we can defund those streams."

...

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, on Tuesday, said he is going to put an additional $250 million a year away in reserves for four years because of a "huge amount of uncertainty" emanating from Washington.

If the Trump administration actually moved to cut funding, “we would be in court immediately to stop it,” de Blasio told reporters.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel reiterated the city would remain a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants. In December he pledged $1 million to assist immigrant families.

That’s it? 2.7 billion?

No good. They can make that up in taxes, 10 cities.

Send in the troops.

Whose money? His personal funds?

And, if the democratic leadership of these cities respond by inciting riots, enlisting the support of these illegal aliens and the local anarchist population, send in troops with live ammo and clean them out once and for all.

These Mayors are breaking the law! If it were any of us we would be charged and prosecuted. In addition to withholding federal funds, Charge, prosecute and lock ‘em up!

Yep, so in effect Mexico has contribute this 2 billion as it would have gone to benefit illegal Mexicans who send their money to Mexico.

Arrest the mayors for conspiracy to aid and abet criminal violation of US laws. Make it a felony. Maybe that would stop a few of these idiots.

The mayors and city council members of these cities should all be arrested, with great fanfare, and frog marched to jail.

Pres Trump will need to withhold a lot more money than that to get these cities to change policy. I would not limit the cuts to only law enforcement funds. But I guess he has to start somewhere.

I am surprised to learn it is only $2 billion that could be withheld. I bet the cities try to go without. Does make it hurt, though not enough.

Hmmm...just about what the annual cost would be to BUILD THE WALL. Nice of those cities to PAY FOR IT...I’d rather have them pay, then Mexico.

I agree, it’s not nearly enough to influence them.

My solution would be passage of a law (not easy to do) which classifies injuries and losses due to sanctuary policies, as well as costs shifted to other portions of the government, as prima facie evidence for a suit against the government entity causing such losses by acting against Federal immigration law. Better yet, bring in some agency issues—and make those responsible for the decisions personally responsible as well.

My reasoning: If the voters have elected officials, they effectively are both approving their actions and responsible for them. They should bear the costs (through the taxes that will have to be generated to pay the judgements).
