Imagine how many people were peaking around those columns and how many others had the view completely blocked.
Wow, any ordinary building would not need that number of columns, even in high seismic risk areas like San Francisco. That large number of closely spaced columns is there for other reasons...bomb-proofing? Stopping shooters? Preventing electronic eavesdropping? Disguising active counter-measures? What else?
