Republican senator aims to curtail Trump's tariff power

President-elect Donald Trump could soon face resistance within his own party over his tariff threats.

A staffer for Republican Senator Mike Lee told trade experts at a lunch in Washington this week that he is looking into ways to curtail the president's wide-ranging powers to impose tariffs, according to one of Lee's aides.

The aide said a bill could be introduced as early as next week, and it may require Trump to go through Congress to use tariffs.

Lee, who represents Utah, declined to comment for this story. Trump's spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.

The aide emphasized that the bill is not just a push against Trump on trade, but part of a broader effort to transfer more legislative power to Congress from the executive branch.

Trade experts who attended the lunch said no major specifics were discussed. Even if it is not passed, this effort to reel in Trump's trade powers could change the optimistic narrative on tariffs that Trump has cast.

Thanks to Sundance for turning us on to this.

Congress has ceded, through law, almost all trade and tariff power to the POTUS.

If Trump decides it's a "National Emergency", he can impose a 50% tariff on any and every product entering the US.

This bill by Mike Lee will not even receive 50% of the Republican caucus.

Wouldn’t Trump just veto any bill?

“Experts warn that tariffs could actually cost U.S. jobs and make prices go up for Americans — as they have in the past.”

In the past? Well, yes they did make prices go up on autos, for example. But back when the United States employed tariffs, and it has not been all that long, the country enjoyed much more prosperity than it does now, and unemployment was nothing like it is now. When manufacturing occurs in the United States, there are more jobs.

I have had idiots argue the point, but it explains why Mexico was upset over Ford pulling out. At least the Mexicans can add two and two. Looks like the posters who pinged me about the glories of manufacturing going to Asia need to go to Mexico and school them.

Reagan imposed tariffs unilaterally when faced with unfair competition.

Motorcycles and TVs and a few other products. He was targeting Japan.

I guess this act by Senator Mike Lee shows Americans exactly what side he is on in regards to sovereignty vs. globalism. It is well past time to primary Senator Mike Lee.

Lee...another one of those “free” traders who is in the command and control of his rich donors, and the donor class absolutely wants to import cheap labor here, and export manufacturing to cheap labor countries. All they care is more money in their pockets, and damn the unwashed masses of middle class workers.

There is no such thing as “free” trade without fair trade. Nothing in life is free. Getting screwed with $800,000,000,000 trade deficits EVERY YEAR, YEAR AFTER YEAR is not patriotic.
