So the big question is, “Can Democrats rise above identity politics?” They have so many bitter practitioners of identity politics, and they are not small fringe groups. It won't be easy.

It will be very difficult; Obama himself only won with a lot of white votes. 2016 must have been a nightmare for the die-hard adherents of the non-white coalition; even the third-party candidates were white.

I also think another lessons for the Dems was that they couldn’t protect Hillary in public discourse the way they did Obama (by simply saying if you disagree you’re racist); many people (including women) were quite comfortable watching her get publicly trashed by Trump. Her arrogant and condescending tone for the last 25 years made it acceptable, I guess.
