It was Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant that fought against Jim Crow laws.

Hayes ran against them, but caved in to win the presidency in that close 1876 election.

Hayes faced a catch-22. Either he agreed to end it in order for the Democrats to go along with awarding him a contested Electoral College victory, or he refused and it would be awarded to NY Dem Gov. Tilden, who would end Reconstruction himself.
