I don’t think it was strictly that she pointed out the error but where she pointed it out. In the class room would have been quite acceptable. Where it might lead to a student being publicly humiliated it was not. Firing the teacher was way over the top. A simple note in her file with an apology to the student would have been more than appropriate.

You are not going to be able to prevent an uneducated child, or adult, from humiliating themselves when you give them a modern handheld device that has access to social media. If, that is, they have the capacity to understand the concept of humiliation.
Much better to call it on him now rather than letting him go through life not knowing how to spell. Sure, wait until he’s humiliated the next 50 years because he can’t get a decent job because he didn’t learn a thing in school.
