President-elect Donald Trump threatened German car makers with a big border tax of 35 percent for cars imported into the U.S.
Trump criticized German auto makers like BMW and Volkswagen for producing the majority of their vehicles in Germany, not the United States. You can build cars for the United States, but for every car that comes to the USA, you will pay a 35 percent tax, Trump told German newspaper Bild. If the German firms decide to build factories in Mexico and plan to sell cars to the U.S., without a 35 percent tax, you can forget that, Trump told reporters.
German automakers have substantial investments in Mexico. BMW announced a $2.2 billion plant in central Mexico that will open in 2019, where it would produce the BMW 3 Series. Another German car company, Volkswagen, opened a $1.3 billion facility in Mexico last year for its Audi division. Even Mercedes-Benz has plans to move part of its operations to Mexico by 2018.

the Obama administrations CAFE chains placed upon them.
= = =
If the new CAFE stands, expect small, light, weak vehicles.
Meanwhile, there are some European cars (that cannot be imported due to DOT regulations) that work pretty good.
Make cars like them here, as part of the mix.
“Ford doesnt have a whole lot of choice with the Obama administrations CAFE chains placed upon them.”
I believe that is about to change.
Dramatically...
Having been to Europe and seen those cars? Oh HELL no, we don’t need them here.
Yes, but until such time as it does change, they’re locked down.
The world’s largest BMW plant is in Greenville-Greer-Spartanburg South Carolina.

If you offer a good business climate, they will come.
Michelin North American HQ is just a couple of miles down the road.
Please don’t consider this an invitation to DamYankees and liberals to move here.
Because so many Mexican peasants are dying to own their own X5.
If the plants were there to serve domestic demand, it would make sense.
But that's not the reason. As a German biz guy said, they are "chasing poverty", trying to find the cheapest squat labor they can find, and foist the resulting POS on us. For a big price.
Party's over, Heinz.
The Germans probably look at Mexico as a huge concentration camp with tons of workers and better food.
Nothing beats a business climate with stoop labor going for $3.00/hr vs $30.00+/hr in the USA.
That's all it is.
The wall is going to ramp up the pressure on the Mexican Uberklasse to the point where they will agree to anything, because by then things will get so bad, it will make "Escape from New York" look like a LuvBoat episode.
Not just the Obammunist, but Bush before him, and Klinton before him. There's a lot of blame to go around for the loss of our jobs to other countries.
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
I can hear AUDI's new commercial pitch line:
"Would you like a little guacamole sauce with your ersatz AUDI 'German engineering' order?"
"Oh and while you're waiting we are serving our customers free tacos, burritos and enchiladas!"
Ah, thanks but NO THANKS.
Lol.. they are in Asheville. With their high taxes and “inclusive” lifestyle. Us regular folk couldn’t afford their overpriced cookie cutter abodes... so onwards and upwards.
I know an engineer at the BMW plant. He and his family moved to Germany for two years of training.
When the refugee badness heated up, they were brought home early for safety
More importantly, Trump has apparently rejected the massive “border adjustment” tax that the congressional Republicans were trying to sell him.
If I read you right, the new Mercedes are on a 10,000 mile service. Basic oil change and a few checks at 10K and a few extra items at 20K. I assume a lot of cars are going that way now that they have started using 100% synthetic oil and most don’t really need much to stay healthy these days.
You said, “so... its very complicated, imho anyway. I do not see an easy solution.”
You are just saying that the law must compel someone who doesn’t want to obey it, and that there is always a fight to pass a new law.
If a prescription costs $25 in Canada then it must not cost $500 here. Countries with socialized medicine mandate the price of drugs coming in their countries. Of course pharma will sell anywhere they can for whatever they can get for it. Under the current system every other country gets the benefit and we pay the bill!
