I lived in Mexico in the late 70's and traveled all over the country alone. And I definitely look like a gringo. I never had a problem or even felt like I was in any danger. I still visit from time to time but am much more cautious now.

Yep, that used to be a nice little town. Went there a few times myself. Too bad that place got ruined.
